On tonight’s episode of Extreme Makeover Home Edition, ABC visits the Gomez family of South Jordan, Utah. The National Marrow Donor Program is highlighted in this episode as Jonah Gomez needs a donor match due to blood disorders that threaten his health. Keep reading for a sneak peek…
Jonah Gomez is a busy, loveable little boy in the first grade. Tonight, Extreme Makeover Home Edition will pay a visit to his family, which includes mom, Jessica, and younger sister, Ellie, in South Jordan, Utah.
Jonah dreams of becoming a professional soccer player, but suffers from blood disorders that have caused him to undergo open-heart surgery already. Jessica and Ellie try to help Jonah live life to the fullest. Jessica had to give up a job with an airline in order to take care of her son, and the family has moved forward, doing the best that they can.
Jonah likes to attend Salt Lake Real soccer games, and even plays on his own team when he is feeling up to it. The team and community have rallied around the Gomez family and have helped to spread the word about bone marrow donation, since Jonah is in need of a match. So far there has been no match for the young boy, possibly because he is of Latin descent and statistically fewer minorities join the National Marrow Donor Program. Jessica has become active in spreading the word about minority bone marrow donation.
During this Extreme Makeover Home Edition build, thousands signed up to become bone marrow donors and matches were found for four patients.
The design team for the build was Ty, Xzibit, Paige Hemmis, and Michael Moloney. The builder was Holmes Homes Inc. Local business Rio Tinto and many volunteers also helped complete the new home.
