Chaz Bono Did Not Appreciate Bruno Tonioli’s Disrespectful Comments

October 26, 2011 12:13 PM by Lisa Princ

Chaz Bono was the latest contestant to be eliminated from Dancing With The Stars  on ABC after the Broadway performances this week. Chaz Bono was obviously emotional about his elimination, and this morning, he shared his thoughts about Bruno Tonioli’s harsh critique. Read on to hear what Chaz had to say!

Dancing With The Stars fans watched as Chaz Bono was eliminated last night, after some very harsh comments by Bruno Tonioli on the Broadway performance show this week. Bruno Tonioli referred to Chaz as a “penguin” in his usual odd way of critiquing, but Chaz Bono found it disrespectful. In an interview this morning with “Good Morning America” Chaz Bono was not a happy camper and told them: “I was called a basketball, a penguin, an Ewok, and I just didn’t appreciate it,” calling out Bruno Tonioli for his comments. Chaz continued: “If you want to critique my dancing and give me some constructive advice so I can try to improve the next time that I’m there, that would be great. But I don’t really know how to be less penguish, and so I kind of took offense to that.”

But Bruno Tonioli was not the only judge Chaz Bono complained about, in fact, he bashed the way the judges handle their critique in general as he said: “It’s hard to take this competition seriously when the judges are so inconsistent.” Despite his frustration, Chaz Bono is not leaving on a sour note, as he is also proud of his accomplishments and thrilled that his stint on the show has strengthened his relationship with his mom, Cher. So now that Chaz Bono is no longer part of the competition, who is he rooting for to take the mirror ball trophy? Chaz thinks that All My Children’s J.R. Martinez is the most deserving of the trophy – we think so also, but on the other hand, Ricki Lake should not be counted out yet either.

What do you think about Chaz being eliminated from the competition? Do you agree with Bruno Tonioli’s critique? Let us know your thoughts by commenting below.

I feel that Bruno Tonioli was very disrespectful and, quite frankly, I think the show should go on without him as well. His flailing arms and exaggerated comments are inappropriate and totally uncalled for. Chaz Bono is not a dancer, never was, and probably never will be – but to refer to any contestant in negative, derogatory terms is completely unacceptable. Axe Bruno and get someone in there with some class.

My God doesn’t make mistakes so the female that mutilated HER own body and now parades around like a male, deserves any comments that were made. I refused to watch the show with her on it, so I didn’t hear the comments!

Im shocked no one blew up at Bruno already! Hes a bully plain and simple. Chaz is right, after watching the show for 4 yrs the judges have no idea what or whom the are judging. Sometimes I wonder if they are all watching the same performance because they’re scores are vastly different!

Chaz Bono’s dancing efforts left a whole lot to be desired, any criticism by the judges were frankly understated. He should never have advanced beyond the first week. He was the worst competitor ever on Dancing With The Stars.

Dearest Chaz….Bruno Tonioli is a sexist pig with very little class. Taking anything he has to say to heart is a total waste of your energy. As for the other guy, not sure of his name; I was watching the night he made a derogitory comment. What a horses ass! Those two are just a couple of has beens lucky to be getting a paycheck. I think the only person on the panel with any class who offers constructive criticism is the woman – sorry, I don’t watch enough to have their names memorized. Please don’t let your dear sweet soul be affected by such morons….

ive watched every dancing with the stars show,i heard every INSULT that was said to chaz and thought at the time that this was about your dancing ability not about how someone thought you may look it was not right and saddened me …you go chaz, i will miss your smiling face.

Personal derogatory remarks are not in order by judges or anyone else. Judge on activities alone. Nowadays there are too many people who feel compelled to downgrade other people in a derogatory manner. This is not condusive to helping people. PCR

I sooooo totally agree with Chaz’s comments about Judge Bruno calling him names. He should be judged on his dancing skills and he has come a long way not to know anything about dancing in the beginning. But on another note, Chaz should of known that being on DWTS there would be harsh words against him and he would have to deal with it like all the other contestants. It’s a shame to have to watch DWTS and all the ‘unnecessary’ comments because I love dancing and enjoy the show …. most of the time.

I do NOT agree with Bruno Tonioli’s critique. I agree with Chaz and applaud him and the way he respectfully spoke to the judges. Toni should take lessons from Chaz on that. I don’t think the judges need to give degrading criticisms to contestants and I think Toni what trying to “showboat” himself. What they need to do is be constructive as it pertains to the contestants technique and style. Kudos to Chaz for speaking out against such crass comments.

My mouth dropped open when Bruno made his comment about & to Chaz Bono! I can’t believe all the ‘hoopla’ over the petty verbal skirmish between Max and Len and this demeaning slam from Bruno gets pretty much ignored?! I think Chaz demonstrated great courage and dignity by appearing on this show and Bruno deserves to be asked to LEAVE the show for his insensitivity!!!

I thought Chaz did a pretty good job and disagree whole heartedly with the remarks from time to time that all the judges have made. For some reason producers of shows “think” we want to hear rude critisizm but they couldn’t be further from the truth. I don’t feel there is a “fine-line” between being totally honest and “rude”. The show must be declining in ratings and they better go back to what made the show so good in the first place. “Rude” and “Class” do not belong in the same sentence and Dancing with the Stars has definately lost its class! Why would you turn a dance competition into a popularity contest? I’m afraid they just lost their way!! The show is too fake for my taste!

I think hes very insecure with herself still even more than before the surgery and he sould stop whinning because no one care to hear it. Since she wanted to be a man maybe she should acted like one. I think him being on the show was highly diguting and not apropriate for childeren to watch everytime she came on i have either change the channel or turn my tv off. Thank you now there dosent have to be any interuptions in the program :):):):):):):):)

I am a huge fan of DWTS..and I don’t blame Chaz Bono one bit for being insulted! I agree with everything he said. I thought he was so light on his feet, had terrific stage presense, and improved every single week! REALLY! I think he kicked ass..and those judges have to be blind to have Nancy Grace, who short sheets the dance week after week! It’s sooo obvious that she has CNN’S support…and why? Because she works for them! Such BS. Her routines are never in sync…painfully slow and not in the beat or tempo…and just plan boring. I think Chaz and his partner should be right in the competition and rank 3rd in my opinion. As far as Bruno…he needs some classes in etiquette and basic MANNERS. His comments were crude, rude and a disgrace to the show!! You go Chaz! You have my admiration and support! YOu and your partner did GREAT!!! TRULY!!

  15. Jim Stephenson Says:

I agree with Bono. The Judges need to tell the people what they did well and what they need to improve on. To compare a dancer to an animal is insulting and does not help improve the dancer. Sometimes two Judges are very petty and often insulting. I would like to see constructive comments not petty insults.

Oh please, it sounds like Chaz hasn’t quite “manned” up yet. He sounds like a little girl who got her feelings hurt. No one can offend you unless you allow them to offend you. Show your confidence Chaz. Just don’t be offended by what anyone says about you.

  17. Cathy Lovato Says:

I was very upset with the comment made by Bruno Tonioli. I enjoyed watching Chaz, and I did vote for him several times. He tried hard, and it was a joy watching him. Mr. Tonioli, is very disrespectful and needs to say he’s sorry, which will never happen. I never once heard Mr. Toniloi remark on any over weight women on the dance floor. Chaz you are wonderful, we will all miss you.

  18. Sallie Correa Says:

I so agree that Bruno’s comments the whole time that Chaz was on the show were totally uncalled for. And I am so happy about what Max told the judges they are way too harsh. Now if this were a professional danceing competion then they would be right on target with their critiques, but these people are not professional dancers, yes they take it seriously and they put so much effort into it just to be shot down week after week. I felt so bad for Chaz and Hope it really made me think that I am not watching this show anymore. So Good For Max for saying how he felt and if I decide to watch the show again next week I am going to call in and vote for Hope and Max no matter what.

If Chaz is really trying to be a man then he better MAN UP and be able to take the comments about his dancing. I personally thought he should have been eliminated at the start. It was all about the fact that Cher MIGHT POSSIBLY show up to be in the audience that kept him in…give me a break…he was just awful.

Show business is a cruel and dirty business..you put it out there in any situation and you can expect deadly consequences at times. Chaz, yes, the comments were hurtful and harsh, but you were fully aware of the controversy before you started this gig and you don’t really think all was going to go smoothly, win or lose, did you? Not in this lifetime. Move on..work on your personal life and yes, your weight, for the sake of your HEALTH, not your looks. Better luck next time.

  21. Bev Says:

I was not, and am not impressed with the two male judges this year at all. They are there to judge the DANCING and not HUMILIATE the people who are dancing. Both Len and Bruno get out of line. They need to change their tactics and critique the DANCE and not the PERSON’S APPEARNCE !!

  22. Barb Says:
    October 26th, 2011 at 1:44 pm

It was down-right mean of Bruno to say what he did about Chaz. You could tell that it hurt Chaz’ feelings and when someone does that to someone else, it’s not right. Judges should stick to critiquing the dancing, not the physical appearance of the dancers. He has done it to others…time for a new judge.

  23. Jim Says:
    October 26th, 2011 at 1:52 pm

I thought the comments were fair, in fact, most of the time the judges used kid gloves on Chaz for the past six weeks. As a hefty gay man, I was tired of seeing Chaz get special treatment.

  24. Nicki Says:
    October 26th, 2011 at 1:56 pm

I think it took alot of courage on Chaz Bono to put himself out there that way. He did great. The judges can be a little too hard on the stars. They seem to forget they are NOT professionals. They can be very nitpicky and calling them names is just not professional. What’s up with that? Thats like being a bully in school.

  25. Charlotte Sine Says:
    October 26th, 2011 at 2:00 pm

I believe Carrie Ann is very respectful, however, I think the two men judges are sometimes rude and sarcastic. It isn’t necessary to humiliate the contestants. These contestants have other careers they have excelled at. What have the judges done other than dance? I think they need to have a heart and be more gracious.

  26. nancy Says:
    October 26th, 2011 at 2:05 pm

The judging system needs changing and Bruno Toniol shoud be booted off. His words were not a critique, They were full of vitriol and hate. In any contest such as this, it should be forbidden. Courtesy and kindness should be the rule. You can judge someone without throwing them under the bus. Such behavior by a judge is unacceptable and should be ruled out of order. People are more and more fed this kind of thing and it belittles all of us.

  27. Lucy Says:
    October 26th, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Judges are very cruel and sometimes they make comments that are totally uncalled for.Often times they don’t appreciate the hard work and the effort contestants make and forget they are not professional dancers. Contestants do not need to be humiliated, they need to be commended for the courage they show to be on a show that is watched by millions of people.

I think what Bruno said was so uncalled for. Who does he think he is? I am sure that their can be many unkind words to say about his looks. These stars are there to learn to dance. They are not professionals plus they are very busy with their jobs and trying to find the time to practice, I give them alot of credit. I’m so glad that Maxs said something. It is about time to stand up for these stars. You should be encouraging them not belittle them. I have been a faithful viewer of DWTS but after what I have seen and heard from the judges, it makes me stop to think if I really want to watch people who think they are so great and really aren’t hurt people that are there to learn. The judges better stop and think what they say before they say it. They might not have a show if it continues. There are alot of very good things that are said but, people remember the bad not the good.

I totally agree with Chaz. That last offensive comment from Bruno sent me over the top. Bruno is hard enough to take (I’m totally sick of him) with all his standing up and waiving his arms around but to make these demeaning comments to Chaz is unaccaptalbe. I am voting him off the island. I have taken to recording the programs so that I can fast forward past Bruno – it’s time for him to go.

And then there’s Len – he started the season in a bad mood and hasn’t gotten much better. Is he that unhappy with his high paying job? He may have a lot of experience in dance but he lacks people skills. You don’t have to be insulting to give feedback.

I believe the judges on Dancing with The Stars should a) go back to school to learn manners, to live by the golden rule, to remember people have feelings b) remember a person’s appearance has nothing to do with how well they perform, c) they are too critical about looks, appearance, who you are, what you are then they are of what the show is all about DANCING, ABILITY TO LEARN AND IMPROVE!! I and others have lost our taste for the show because of their bad behavoir

  36. Jennifer Kennedy Says:
    October 26th, 2011 at 3:36 pm

I agree with Chaz – they need a new panel of judges – I thought the remarks towards him were disgusting…..how come they never made any comments to the goofy David Arquette? He can’t even dance – acts like he’s on drugs…also, Ricki Lake is not that great – the best so far have been J. R., Chaz, Rob Kardahian (except don’t let his Mother talk on future shows – she threw him off balance) and Nancy Grace – get new judges that are from the USA!!!! And who picks the music? Not the greatest….

  37. Donna Says:
    October 26th, 2011 at 3:44 pm

The comments from the judges where uncalled for towards Chaz. My opinion there where a few other stars that should have been booted first. Is it me or does it look like Ricky Lake’s dances are all the same. I believe it’s alittle harder for someone to feel graceful when alittle over weight. An advantage to a thinner person. This was my first year of watching. I changed the channel after there comments to Chaz and will not watch the show every again. Very unfair and uncalled for.

  38. Jay Says:

Chaz should have been eliminated weeks ago. His dancing was horrendous. But as a person… BRAVO!

I agree that the judges are being inconsistent, far too personal and not very helpful at all. They should limit their comments to DANCING and leave the rest for the catty viewers.

  39. Mary Says:
    October 26th, 2011 at 7:33 pm

Regardless of what anyone thinks of Chaz as a person that should not reflect on the judgements of his dance moves. I’ve been disgusted by bruno’s comments all season. Many are overtly sexual, and if I see him jump out of his seat and girate his hips one more time I’m deleting the show from my tv. If I was nancy grace I wouldn’t be letting my kids watch this from the audience. This show is not family television anymore.

  40. Pamela Says:

Bruno was more than rude. He was cruel and ugly. If he had made cruel comments about Nancy Grace’s less than perfect legs, or J.R.’s facial disfigurement, can you imagine the uproar? His “flapping” hands and arms (rightly described by Cher) when Chaz was filmed in the booth saying that he was tired of the insults was a show of contempt. For the person who thinks that Chaz is the worst dancer on the show, that person has not been watching DWTS enough. He was not the worst, but he is not a dancer. However, he did improve from week to week and took the nasty cruel comments stoically. I thought he “manned up” quite well to Bruno’s personal cruel diatribes. I am also very tired of Bruno’s fake lusting after the women and his constant insistence that they be sexier and “dirtier” in their dancing. His mind appears to be in the gutter. I am writing the network. His comments go way beyond useful criticism and he should be forced to apologize publicly. One might almost think he is jealous.
