Carrie Ann Inaba And Len Goodman Defend Themselves Against Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s Comments

October 27, 2011 05:57 AM by Lisa Princ

After all the drama this week on ABC‘s Dancing With The Stars, we have heard from Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who refuses to apologize to the judges, and now it’s the judges’ turn to speak out. Carrie Ann Inaba and Len Goodman recently spoke up to defend themselves and the show after Maksim’s outburst. What did they have to say?

Maksim Chmerkovskiy got into a heated debate with Len Goodman this week on Dancing With The Stars, telling Len that maybe it was time he got out (of the business), and Carrie Ann Inaba immediately jumped to Len’s defense and asked Maks to be respectful. Maks continued on as he waited for the scores, where he then said it was “his show.” While Maksim Chmerkovskiy may not be ready to apologize, neither Carrie Ann Inaba or Len Goodman will be apologizing either.

Len Goodman stood his ground when he spoke to Access Hollywood on Tuesday when he told them: “I was a little bit aggrieved at the time, but now I’ve slept on it, and I’m sure Maks has slept on it. What he’s saying is so untrue. I am the defender of all the pros, I think all those professionals do a fantastic job. What they’ve got to understand is they’re on trial, and we’re the judges. You can’t be a judge at your own trial! I tell the truth, that’s basically what I do, whether they like it or not. I honestly try to be truthful and sometimes the truth hurts.”

Meanwhile, Carrie Ann Inaba immediately took to Twitter on Monday evening as she posted: “Every journey is unique to each contestant and everyone’s ten looks slightly different. Another FYI: I forgive you because you don’t know better- scores are locked in before we speak. So we have scored before any words spoken.” However, Carrie Ann Inaba was not about to let Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s comment about it being “his show” go without being addressed. Carrie Ann took a jab at Maks on Tuesday when she posted: “Just want to send out RESPECT and LOVE to everyone who works on #DWTS. It’s a group effort through and through. I’m sorry for the disrespect all our crew and staff were shown last night. A Television Show is made by not only the people ON CAMERA but the exceptional people who are behind the scenes, making everything just right so that when on camera talent steps on to the stage, it’s safe and sound….and just right. Thank you to everyone who works on #DWTS!”

What did you think of the heated exchange by Maks and Len Goodman this week? Should Maksim Chmerkovskiy apologize? Are the judges right, or is Maks right? Comment and share your thoughts with us!

They both make good points. Max is a pro, so his stance is simple. You judge every contestant based on content and skill. Problem is that the judges are judging amateur celebrities as well, and if the judges didn’t use some discretion and judge some on effort, no one would go on the show. Or at the least, it wouldn’t be much fun.

Make no mistake, the show, the network, the judges and stars themselves are loving this. It’s all about getting viewers, and nothing attracts viewers like conflict. The longer this drags on and more heated it gets, the better it is for the show. I mean the show was starting to get stagnant and this year was not a great year for “stars”. When Chaz Bono and Hope Solo are your big “draws” then you are really reaching. At that point, you are stretching the definition of “star”. The weekly musical performers are bigger stars than the dancers. So yeah, they’ll drag this out until is subject to the law of dimishing returns.

I feel bad for the stars that are truly NOT dancers. They are always put against people like Rikki (who has been on broadway) Kristy (who can do flips on ice skates)..it’s always such an unfair competition. People like Chaz, Hope, Nancy and RJ are the real deal that are starting at square 1. The judges expect too much from these non dancer types. Most of the winners are people with some kind of experience athletically for the dance.

I think Max went too far when he said that Len Goodman should step down. While I can understand his frustration, he should not make immature outbursts like that. He’s always had a conflict with Carrie Ann; but he also went too far when he declared that was HIS show. He is just one of the aspects of DWTS. Maybe he’ll leave after this. this would be a pity since he’s certain the best and most dynamic pro of all.

I think Maks is overated. Most season’s he is not even in the COMPETITION at this point in the season because he was already eliminated….so how could he have “made” the show. I think he should be the one to retire! and BTW it is a COMPETITION – his role is to be judged.

I understand both sides. The judges are there to judge & it’s been more restrained than past years, especially Len – more compliments from him this year. The judges [we know which one] should keep the animal comparisons down to a minimum. Chaz was right to be insulted.
Maks should apologize, since the judges were doing their job. Emotions run high with the couples. It’s not easy to put your heart & soul into a routine & receive harsh comments. You have to expect that.

If I had to give judges a score, Carrie Ann’s would be a 5. She prefers to judge with her heart, not her head, which results
(for example) in a 9 for Nancy Grace’s sometimes-awkward routine, and (this one really blew my mind)….9′s for both Rob (a plodder, not a dancer) and J. R. (one of the few dancers among the Stars).

In a baseball umpiring analogy, Carrie Ann’s “strike zone” is inconsistent, and I’m almost ready to kiss that show goodbye.

You can be truthful, but respectful at the same time. The effort is there everyweek. Sometimes the techinque is not. Len and Bruno were disrespectful. Bruno needs to stop calling the stars other names like animal names. Len needs to speak to the stars like they are students, not put them.

Maks is an egomaniac, and we’ve known that for a long time. But we love to watch him dance, so we will probably forgive him again. Carrie Ann is the best judge!

Does no one get it??? Carrie Ann, Len and especially Bruno: JUDGE like you’re supposed to, but on technique like you’re supposed to. NO need to be MEAN and take personal shots and compare people to animals. That is NOT your job. For a larger person to be called round is MEAN. Uncalled for an unnecessary. Honestly it was about time someone said something, and that day the comments were especially mean. Why don’t Carrie Ann and Len get this easy-to-understand point?

I think Maks should appologize as he seems to have become (or always has been) very errogant.
He’s not the whole show, that’s for sure!! Quite frankly, if he left I would NOT miss him.

  13. Carolyn Says:

Max is always outspoken and I like him. He is a talented dancer and I suspect he pushes his celebrity hard. Having said that, his outburst Monday night was wrong on many levels, most assuredly his claim that DWTS is his show. Derek might argue that and so would I.

  14. Dee Says:
    October 27th, 2011 at 3:52 pm

OMGosh!! Carrieann, get over yourself!! Max said, he didnt mean to say it was his show!! He is not an american and words came out wrong. You are also guilty of bullying past contestants…

  15. Don Teeler Says:

I agree with Max. It is about time that judges be held accountable for their inappropriateness. Yes he made a mistake by calling it “his show”, but he does not have to be subjected by inappropriate behavior by judges calling dancers penguins, ewoks, trolls, etc. and exaggerating statements about bad performance. Judges scoring and comments are so inconsistent and embarrassing that I can understand a pro reaching a point of unwilling to take that anymore. Because you are judge does not excuse your inappropriate behavior.

Well I think Maks was out of line with the remarks he made to Len I may not always agree with him, but I know he is a professional judge and he is trying to get the best out of each and everyone. Maks really need to apologize to everyone on DWTS.

I agree with Max the judges are prejudiced and they had better change or no one will watch the show.

I have to agree somewhat with Maks, I really felt the Hope’s scores and comments from the judges were not fair. Seriously… the judges should refrain from insults, that means not saying they walk like a man, compare them to animals, or assuming they are not working hard enough…etc.

Hope’s dancing may not have been the best but she certainly did NOT deserve the negative comments and I completely understand Maks’ frustration.

The judging is very subjective, once the judges have thier favorites it really doesn’t matter what the others do.

Really sad. I love the show for the dancing it’s a great show, but the comments from the judges have really gotten out of hand.

Maks is right. The judges don’t judge based solely on talent. If they did then many of those in the competitions over the many seasons would have had far lower scores. Point and case Len hates all the pizzazz and flitting about before during and at the end of routines but ONLY if its MAKSIM or MARK. He has yet to critique the same for the female dancers when they have the same break from traditional. The Judges are there to score the dance and only the dance. The should be looking at technique, holds, foot work, difficulty of routine, amount of dance specific moves, lifts, not did they smile big and look like they were enjoying themselves. We as the audience who don’t know the technique moves etc. will judge whether they appear to enjoy it or not. The judges have tilted competitions in favor of a contestant multiple times before and cost the mirror ball trophy. Laila Ali, Mel B, Erin Andrews, Brandy, and Kirstie Alley hmmmm wait aren’t those all Maksim’s partners there was also Sabrina Bryan, Bristol Palin, Chelsea Kane, wait aren’t those Mark’s partners hmmmmmmmm even though Mark has won the trophy twice he should have had it with Bryan. Point is the Judges need to stop worrying about what they look like to the audience and worry about judging the dance and only the DANCE aka Bruno SHUT UP Carrie QUIT PICKING FAVORITES and Len JUDGE IT EVENLY do this and the judge the actual dance. Maksim would have 3 trophies, Mark would have 3 trophies if you had.

While I understand Maks’ frustration, I feel he was totally out of line with his comments, especially the dig about DWTS being “his show”. I don’t recall seeing him credited as creator of this program, nor do I recall him being a chief choreographer, so HOW can it be “his”?
I have to say I don’t like all the comments the judges make either, but, Len is right in pointing out that that is their JOB and they take their responsibility seriously. And I have to admire that, even when I disagree with their assessments of the couples they are judging.
Maks…seriously, guy, it’s time to take a bite of that humble pie.

My opinion is that the judges may be criticizing the dance which is their job, but they sometimes extend their “judgment” to the dancer personally, i.e.,You look like a penguin (Bruno about Chazz). This does not seem professional to me.

I enjoy it when the judges give critiques and then give suggestions as to how to perform correctly. Len has seemed very angry this year. Maybe he should take a year off.

someone needs to tell Bruno he is not funny!!! Name calling is just RUDE!!!!!!!!!! These people come on your show and really don’t want to be ridiculed. Len does it sometimes and I really feel sorry for those contestants. carrie Ann is always very nice. Max was very disrespectful and I hope he apoligizes. I have never missed a show and I don’t take phone calls during the show. I am one of your biggest fans but Bruno is just making me mad. The show just makes me smile. Life for me and my husband has had acouple tough years. DWTS is the one show that I just enjoy. Thank You. lynn Rhode

I think both were very wrong. Max for thinking everyone thinks its HIS show, thats far from the truth. He himself has been very critical of his partners, at times going beyond the bounderies. Len was very UNPROFESSIONAL. I realize this was in the heat of the moment but NEVER have I listened to a judge bacome as combative as he did. It was obvious to everyone who watched that Hope Solo was really bad that night but to describe it the way he did was VERY unprofessional. Bruno is also a culprit here. His taunting at the way Chaz danced was pathetic. He too is suppose to be a professional, the contestants are AMATEURS, give them the credit and support they need……don’t resort to “name calling” as a form of judgement

“His show” my butt! This jerk could be replaced by any one of half dozen good looking Russian dancers tomorrow and the show would not suffer one bit. Maks is obviously a talented pro but he is not the best on that show or even as good as he thinks he is. Derek and Mark are far more innovative choregraphers (as are Lacey and Cheryl on the female side). Derek has such speed and fliexibility,he can move in ways that Maks will never be able to. As for past partners, Maks has hd some great ones, Stacy Keibler, Layla Ali and Mel B but he could never quite get them to the top. I think its his slightly weak choreography. Look at his free dance with Mel B-horribly choreographed and she was the best dancer out there. At any rate, he certainly ahs the advantage with Hop over Rikki Lake, he just can’t see to do anything with her. I think its his self absorbed personality and arrogance that turns off his partners and doesn’t allow them to fully shine.

The judges on this show have just gotten out of hand. Len is my favorite but he has his favorite dancers and I would appreciate him being more evenhanded with his criticisms and praise. Carrie Ann and Bruno run a race for biggest idiots. Carrie Anne has fawns over the men like she is in heat. Bruno is a drama queen, doing whatever he can to get more camera time. He should have been fired over his comments about Billy Ray Cyrus and Michael Bolton. I agree they were terrible dancers but no need in humiliating them. Chaz was no dancer either but I respect him for being gracious after repeated insults. I admire Maks for standing up to them – someone needed to. I love Derek Hough but I am very disappointed in him for not supporting Maks. I know Maks said it was his show but I think in the heat of his anger he miscommunicated. I’ve read several blogs and the majority of the public support him – as they should!!

I agree with some here. Calling of names is very non-professional and not appreciated by most. It is a form of bullying that we are fighting to erase in the schools and the world. Judges should critique the dancing and not the dancers personally. That is despicable in my opinion. I think all the judges need a lesson in respect for the individual and learn to judge evenly on specified criteria.
Max is hot tempered and calls it like he sees it but those remarks should be reserved for non-televised segments. He is right about many things he does day but there is a time and place to say these things and in front of the camera is not the time or place. Max is a great dancer and wonderful instructor who expects much from the non-dances but anyone agreeing to do the show should know this about him.
I no only resent the personal attacks on the contestants but also the professionals. I remember when a professional was called out because they danced with no shoes. Big deal. Did it affect the dance. NO!!! It added to it. The technique was there and that is what should have been looked at and judged.

I am also ready to stop watching. I am so tired of hearing the judges putting people down. They do pick their favorites even in the professionals. you can tell they do not like Lacy they never give her the credit she deserves. Bruno and his yelling and comments are pathetic. Give people a chance don’t match them up with show people who already have ability. Get rid of all the judges try some new ones.

I enjoy watching Max dance, interact and teach. I do feel that the judges pick their favourites at least by week three and even I can predict how tey will handle each show. They get too personal instead of judging the dance itself. I look at how far someone as come during their stay on DWTS. It one is alread a good dancer…so be it but it’s the ones who work hard and progress more than I am impressed with. I definitely feel that the judges are biased. Now that Maks if off the show now, there is NOTING interesting for me to warch..so I don’t. Let me know when Maks is back and I’ll be back.
