Reality TV Magazine had a chance to chat with Joe Bastianich, judge on the hit series Masterchefearlier today, where he dished about what he is looking forward to in the new season, and he even gave his tips for hopeful folks who are looking to audition. Check out the interview below, and be sure to look through the casting posters throughout this article, so you can find the perfect place to audition, and check out www.masterchefcasting.com. Joe Bastianich, Gordon Ramsay, and Graham Elliot would love to see you there!
RTVM: With the season three casting calls underway, what are you looking forward to about the new season?
Joe Bastianich: Casting is currently underway, and we will actually be doing open casting calls in Boston and Miami this weekend. Gordon Ramsay, Graham Elliot, and I will be conquering and dividing to spread all over the country for the casting calls. I am looking forward to getting back out there again, meeting all the contestants, and getting to know all the contestants.
RTVM: How do you anticipate the talent level to change for the new season?
Joe Bastianich: As the show gets bigger, the talent level gets better and better. Each year, the bar is set higher, and the dishes get better, which we anticipate will happen this season.
RTVM: Did you ever think (back in season one) that Masterchef would such a huge hit?
Joe Bastianich: I always knew it was a great format. It’s a lifestyle about knowing great food, and the search for great food. It definitely took off in a great way.
RTVM: You kind of get the rap as the mean judge on the show, why do you think that is?
Joe Bastianich: Look, we all have a role there. I come from many years of restaurant experience, and I kind of approach this just as I do my professional life. I have to separate the real talent from the phonies. I take it seriously, and have no time for bullshit.
RTVM: What is the best part of judging Masterchef for you?
Joe Bastianich: For me, it’s watching as we start with 100 contestants, and getting that number down to 40….seeing them take that journey. It’s personal, emotional, and I love to get to know the contestants and watch their journeys.
RTVM: What is the ideal contestant for you?
Joe Bastianich: Someone who can cook, put food on a plate, and communicate to the judges. Basically, you need to put yourself on a plate. We need to see the whole package, it’s not only about the cooking.
RTVM: What is your biggest pet peeve about contestants?
Joe Bastianich: I would have to say when they over complicate their dish, or try to imitate. When people are not true to who they are, they will generally fail.
RTVM: What advice do you have for anyone thinking of heading to the casting call and auditioning?
Joe Bastianich: If you are going to compete, bring me your signature dish that shows who you are. Cook with honesty and purity, and get my attention. Your dish needs to show us who you are.
A huge thank you to Joe Bastianich for chatting with us today. Stay tuned for more information on the new season of Masterchef. Please let us know if you attend a casting call!
