Kim Lyons knows a thing or two about being a trainer on The Biggest Loser of NBC, since she did spend two seasons there. Today, we sat down to chat with Kim Lyons and get her thoughts on Anna Kournikova leaving The Biggest Loser, as well as a possible return to the weight loss series! What did Kim Lyons have to say about it all? Read on for our exclusive interview…
The Biggest Loser fans have expressed their dislike for Anna Kournikova from the get go, wishing and hoping that Jillian Michaels would return to the show. What about former trainer, Kim Lyons? Kim Lyons spent season 3 and 4 on the series, but did not return for season 5, but would she be willing to come back next season in light of Anna leaving? This morning, we were lucky enough to get a chance to chat one on one with Kim, who dished about Anna Kournikova, Dolvett Quince, her new snack bars, her awesome post-baby body, and the possibility of a return. Check out our interview with Kim Lyons below!
RTVM: Before we chat about the show, I have to say you look great after having your son, and we all want your secrets!
Kim Lyons: It was not easy, but I was determined. For 15 years, I heard “but, you are not a mom, so you don’t understand,” and I was determined to prove that as a mom, I could do it. It took me about 12 weeks to get back to my post baby weight, but even after that my body did not look the same. It took much longer to get my body back to where I wanted it.
RTVM: How are you enjoying life as a mom?
Kim Lyons: I love it. I have always been crazy busy, and he just comes along with me most of the time. I have been blessed with such an easy baby, and I really enjoy being a mom. I could not imagine my life without him.
RTVM: Any chance of baby number 2 in the future?
Kim Lyons: I am open to it, but right now I am just enjoying my son. I have so many options right now, we’ll see.
RTVM: Can you share your thoughts on Anna Kournikova’s departure from The Biggest Loser?
Kim Lyons: It definitely comes as no surprise that Anna Kournikova will not be returning. It was something different, they gave it a try, but it just didn’t work. Don’t get me wrong, Anna is a respected and amazing athlete, but she has not had a lifetime of training to aide her on the show. To be a trainer on The Biggest Loser requires knowledge far beyond that of an athlete – it’s challenging. You need to be able to connect to the contestants on an emotional level as well, which is something that Anna has struggled with this season. Obviously, Anna is respected as an athlete, but you need to gain respect as a trainer as well.
RTVM: Since Anna Kournikova had a tough time connecting emotionally with the contestants, is it safe to assume that is a tough feat?
Kim Lyons: I feel bad for Anna – it is tough. You know, you are fighting a lifetime of bad habits. Once you show them success though, and they see that success, they are more determined emotionally. One thing people know is that The Biggest Loser has stood the test of time, and everyone who comes on the show, knows that they will eventually succeed. The secret is just giving them that itty-bitty taste of success.
RTVM: We’ve heard Anna say that working with morbidly obese people is very tough and very different from those who are not. How tough was it for you during your time on The Biggest Loser?
Kim Lyons: Believe it or not, I did not find it that difficult. I mean, the training is simple, and it is like starting at ground zero and working your way up by building and building. It’s like having a clean slate to work with, where you get to go in and change everything – from exercise to nutrition, and so on. With that said, it can be challenging if you don’t have that training background that is needed to help them succeed. That is where my 15 years of experience came in handy for me.
RTVM: What do you think of Dolvett Quince as a trainer?
Kim Lyons: I like him. He is 100% trainer, all the way. It takes a few seasons to get everything down on The Biggest Loser, as it’s different than regular training. It’s hard and he is doing great – he really is a great trainer.
RTVM: With Anna Kournikova out next season, is there any chance that you might return to the show?
Kim Lyons: I loved my time on the show. When I hear from fans, it’s amazing that they want to see me back, and I would absolutely do it again if I were asked. I feel like I absorbed everything I learned on the show, and it was life changing for me. So, yes if the opportunity arises, I will back on The Biggest Loser in a heartbeat.
RTVM: How did the experience on the show change your life?
Kim Lyons: You know, I never thought going into it, that I would end up this passionate about it. It makes you think “who cares about a six pack,” as working with these people and changing their healthy really puts everything into perspective. I wish that the show would show a little more of the workouts and nutrition that actually go into it, instead of the drama, but in the end drama sells. However, the success stories are what give others hope. People always ask me what my favorite memory on the show is, and it was in season 3, when I walked into the room and all of my contestants were crying, and I was left thinking “oh no, what drama just happened,” but it was not drama at all. Instead they were crying because they had just gotten their health reports back, and some of them were no longer dealing with high blood pressure, or diabetes. That for me, oh my gosh, had such a huge impact on me as a trainer.
RTVM: What current projects are you working on?
Kim Lyons: Right now, I am training hands on, and working with Take Control of Your Diabetes by helping people exercise and eat properly to help their diabetes. I have also developed the perfect snack bar. I came up with a nutrition bar, that has the perfect balance of fiber, fats, nutrients, and added dark chocolate to it. It’s called Your Body Your Life bar, and it really is a dream snack. You can find it on my website, which is www.kimlyons.com right now, and it will be available in stores soon.
A huge thank you to Kim Lyons for chatting with us today, she is such a sweetheart and we had a blast!
