The X Factor Recap: Top Seven Perform Michael Jackson Songs Live

November 30, 2011 08:29 PM by Candace Young

After last week’s double elimination in which Lakoda Rayne and LeRoy Bell were sent home, seven finalists remain on The X Factor. Two more will be sent home tomorrow night and the top five will be revealed. Tonight, the contestants take on Michael Jackson songs as they perform live in hopes of continuing on. Keep reading for all the highlights…

Michael Jackson’s family members are in attendance to see the performances on The X Factor tonight – his mom, Katherine, along with his children Paris, Prince, and Blanket.

Josh Krajcik kicks off the performances with his version of Dirty Diana. It lacks a certain energy, but is raw Josh, and he plays some wicked guitar near the end. L.A. is impressed that he stepped out of his comfort zone. Paula calls it a show stopping performance. Simon feels it was his weakest performance so far. Nicole is proud of Josh.

Astro puts on a stellar stage show as he raps his way through Black or White. Nicole liked his lyrics, and notes that Astro appeared to be having a good time. Paula was particularly impressed and even thinks he could win. Simon agrees that it was apparent he was enjoying himself, and feels Astro deserves to be there. L.A. is happy about the performance.

Drew is doing Billie Jean for Michael Jackson week. She opts for a slowed down rendition of the tune in her signature vocal style. It has a dark theatrical feel. L.A. liked it. Nicole mentions how Drew never leaves the chair. Paula also thought Drew should have been doing more, but enjoyed the vocals. Simon thinks she’s a great artist and argues with Paula.

Rachel Crow starts out saying, “Michael, we love you.” She then launches into Can You Feel It. Rachel sounds good and works the stage, but somehow it’s lacking punch or power. L.A., Nicole, and Paula aren’t as thrilled with this performance as they have been with Rachel’s past efforts.  Simon disagrees, and thinks it was great.

Marcus Canty chooses to do an upbeat version of PYT (Pretty Young Thing) with a bit of groove to it. He is wearing a very Michael-esque white vest and puts on a show that is fun and gets the crowd clapping along. The judges enjoy the performance, especially Paula who thinks Marcus is the whole package.

Chris Rene has chosen to do I’ll Be There for Michael Jackson week on The X Factor.  Simon thinks it’s a risky song choice. In a blinged-out letterman jacket, Chris delivers a funked-up version of the tune. Nicole felt his spirit and loved his fresh spin on the song. Paula compliments him on how he looks, and on his heart. Simon says the vocal was a little bit shaky, and he’ll need support from his hometown voters. L.A. says he did a great job.

Melanie Amaro is last to perform tonight. Simon gave her Earth Song. In a goth black dress and red ringlets, Melanie belts out her performance and the crowd is blown away. L.A. says he thought they were at a Melanie Amaro concert – amazing. Nicole agrees it was the best of the night. Paula says it was flawless and she nailed it. Simon could not be more proud.

Katherine Jackson says she thought it was a great show. Paris and Prince both chime in to say how much they enjoyed it (though they sat expressionless through much of it) as Steve Jones signs off. Tomorrow night there will be two eliminations so vote for your fave!

so far my all around favorite is josh, he is real he sings from his heart with no gimmicks, and of all the singers he is the only one that could go on stage with no back up singers. the others are good, but josh seems to pull the soul from those of us who he is singing to. astro is good at rap, very good indeed, but he seems to have no other talent, every song he does is rap it amazes me that he has gotten this far,the same can be said about drew, she and astro both sound the same every week, it does become boring listening to them.
