Former 2-term Illinois governor and Celebrity Apprentice contestant, Rod Blagojevich was sentenced to 14 years in prison today for crimes ranging from wire fraud to trying to sell the senate seat vacated by President Obama.
Rod Blagojevich reveled in his new found infamy after he was ousted as governor of Illinois and charged with 17 corruption accounts including wire fraud, attempted extortion, bribery and conspiracy. At the time Rod Blagojevich proclaimed his innocence by saying he was ”stunned” and that his wiretapping comments were “taken out of context”.
While capitalizing on his infamy the disgraced governor appeared on Donald Trump’s Celebrity Apprentice in a season that included: Sharon Osbourne, Brett Michaels, Curtis Stone, Cyndi Lauper and Holly Robinson Peete. Donald Trump initially praised his “tremendous courage and guts”, but fired him in the 4th episode after Rod Blagojevich repeatedly clashed with his male teammates. His wife Patti Blagojevich also earned her reality stripes by taking part in I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!. She was a popular contestant and forged friendships with other contestants, including former NBA star John Salley, before ultimately finishing in 4th place.
After being found guilty, Rod Blagojevich pleaded for leniency and while the judge determined that he had most likely taken responsibility for his crimes, he still sentenced him to 14 years. With sentencing guidelines as they are he will have to serve at least 85% of his sentence, or just over 12 years. Rod Blagojevich and his wife said that after sentencing they were going to go home to explain all of this to their 2 young daughter, Amy and Anne. The ex-governor will have to surrender by February 15, 2012.
