Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar, star of TLC’s 19 Kids and Counting, announced today that Michelle has suffered a miscarriage. During a routine doctor’s visit to find out the sex of her 20th child, the doctor did not detect a heartbeat and concluded that a miscarriage had occurred.
Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar announced that they were expecting their 20th child in November. Thrilled and excited, Michelle Duggar thought her days of being pregnant had come to an end.
Their reality show underwent a name change in 2009 with the arrival of the Duggar’s 19th child, Josie. In her early 40′s when pregnant with Josie, Michelle Duggar suffered a wide array of complications from gall bladder problems and pre-eclampsia. Knowing the baby was in danger doctors delivered Josie Duggar 3 1/2 months early weighing only 1 pound 6 ounces. She suffered multiple medical emergencies, but is now a healthy, happy toddler.
During Josie Duggar’s homecoming the couple said that they would welcome another baby, even after all that they had gone through with their latest addition. After suffering a miscarriage during her second pregnancy, which Michelle Duggar blamed on oral contraception, the couple decided to leave the size of their family up to God.
Even while receiving backlash at what could be perceived as a “problem pregnancy” the couple remained outspoken and determined that this was the plan that God intended for them.
A day that began with tremendous joy has ended in heartbreak.
“I feel like my heart broke telling my children,” says Michelle told People Magazine. “They have all been so excited about this baby and looking forward to April coming around and having a new little one in our arms. That was the most difficult. The Lord is the giver of life and he can choose when that life is ready to go on and be with Him.”
