December 15, 2011 01:21 PM by Perry Miller

Giuliana Rancic announced this fall that she was in the early stages of breast cancer. After an unsuccessful lumpectomy, she underwent a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery this week. She is recovering well and was even “cracking jokes’ according to her husband, Bill Rancic. The E! News host and style network reality star credits her ongoing fertility struggles with finding her cancer early and saving her life.

E! News anchor and Style Network Reality star Giuliana Rancic is recovering from a successful double mastectomy. She announced her decision to undergo the drastic procedure on the Today Show last week, explaining that there is less than 1% chance of the cancer returning with a double mastectomy. Compared to a 20-40% chance by undergoing another lumpectomy and a grueling round of chemotherapy.

“G is doing really well,” husband Bill Rancic told E! News. “Her surgery lasted about four hours and the doctors were very pleased with the result.” “She had a little bit of pain through the night but is feeling much better this morning and was cracking jokes,” he added.

Giuliana Rancic was first diagnosed with early stage breast cancer this fall. Her ongoing fertility issues and attempts at in vitro fertilization have been heartbreakingly detailed on her Style Network show “Giuliana and Bill“. It was during a visit to a fertility clinic in Denver that is was recommended by her doctor that she have a mammogram. During this procedure the breast cancer was found.

Giuliana’s first treatment option was an unsuccessful lumpectomy, leading to the decision for a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Initially skeptical about losing her breasts and having scars, Giuliana changed her thinking after seeing the results of a friend’s double mastectomy. She has continued her positive outlook, even when commenting on the thought of losing her breasts. “Listen, I love my girls [but] I’m gonna feel more like a woman when this is all done,” said Giuliana. “I think scars are beautiful. I think scars tell a story.”
