Last night on The X Factor, Melanie Amaro walked away $5 million dollars richer, just as Simon Cowell had hoped. So, how does it feel to be the winner of the very first season of The X Factor? In a press conference earlier today, Melanie Amaro shared her thoughts with us. More after the jump!
The X Factor fans watched last night as Melanie Amaro, who Simon Cowell had originally cut from the competition, walk away as the winner after the viewers had their say. In a press conference today, Melanie shared her thoughts on the competition, what it feels like to be the winner, and what she plans to spend her prize money on. Check out the interview below!
Question: Who did you feel was your biggest competition?
Melanie Amaro: Chris Rene was my biggest competition. Everyone knew he was an original artist and he wrote his own music and he connected well with everyone. So I think he was my biggest competition.
Question: What was going through your head as you were announced the winner?
Melanie Amaro: It is so surreal. I feel amazing. I feel as though I’m in a dream. This is not real. Last night was amazing for me, I was so shocked. I feel so blessed.
Question: How do you feel you have grown since the show?
Melanie Amaro: I’ve grown not only as a person, but as an artist as well. I’ve matured and really stepped into my own. I am learning so much from the industry and from being in the competition. I’m really happy about everything, all the changes that have happened in my life.
Question: Do you feel that when Simon Cowell first sent you home that it was staged for drama, or genuine?
Melanie Amaro: I don’t know. All I know is that he made a mistake and he apologized about it and I moved on from it, and look where I am now. So whatever happened in the past is the past and I’m looking forward to the future. When he showed up at my house, that was a total surprise. I had no idea he was coming. I had no clue Simon was coming to my house. So when he showed up I was like, “Oh my God!”
Question: What did everyone say to you after you were announced as the winner?
Melanie Amaro: They said that they’re all so very proud of me and I really deserved this and Simon was so proud. He was more nervous than I was backstage, actually. He kept saying to me, “I’m nervous.” He was like, “My stomach is in knots. I’m so nervous.” And all I kept saying was, “Why are you so nervous? I’m the one that’s supposed to be nervous!” Yeah, they were all proud. My family and the judges were all happy for me and they were very accepting of the fact that I had won.
Question: What are you going to do with your prize money?
Melanie Amaro: I’m definitely going to buy myself a foot massager, and buy my mom a new house.
Question: Did you ever think after being cut from the show, that you could come back and win it all?
Melanie Amaro: Actually, no. This is really bad, because I should have really believed in myself, but I kept thinking to myself that I wasn’t good enough. I constantly kept telling myself that. When I broke that was when I sang my song, I was consciously telling myself, “Just be yourself, Mel. Just let go and just be you.” And I did that and I let the accent out and let everyone know about my journey and everything I’d been through.
Question: If you had another mentor instead of Simon, do you feel you would have made it this far?
Melanie Amaro: No. I don’t think I would have gone very far at all because I needed Simon to be that tough judge that he was with me in order for me to grow to get to a higher place. For me I needed Simon.
Question: What did you do when you were cut originally?
Melanie Amaro: I went back to working. I went back to doing the same old thing I was doing before. And I wasn’t happy. I was a little miserable. But after getting a chance to come back, I felt as though, wow, I really wasn’t meant to be doing all these other things. I was meant to sing.
Question: What is the most important thing you learned from the competition?
Melanie Amaro: The most important thing I learned from the competition about myself is that I can sing any type of genre of music and actually do it very well.
Question: Are there any artists or producers you would like to work with?
Melanie Amaro: I’d love to work with Mariah Carey. She strives to be the best in what she does and that’s why I admire her. She’s an all-around great person. She’s an amazing person. And I’d also love to work with L.A. Reid, because he’s a great producer. He’s a great mentor. He’s wonderful
Question: What do you feel set you apart from the other contestants?
Melanie Amaro: I feel that I had a stronger range than a lot of the other contestants. I think that just me doing what I do with all of my heart kind of put me apart from a lot of the other contestants. I sing all the time and when I sing, I sing with all of me. I sing to the very, very pit of my soul. I sing, because it is something that I truly, truly enjoy.
Melanie Amaro did not reveal any details about her upcoming album, but stay tuned as we will keep you up to date as soon as we hear something!
