Now that Melanie Amaro has won the first season of The X Factor in the US, she’s getting advice from seasoned musicians left and right. And after performing “Give Me Everything” with Pitbull and contestant Marcus Canty, Ne-Yo offered his own wise words to the 19-year-old champion during the season finale last week: don’t be like Britney. What exactly did he mean by that? Read his clarification — as well as advice from Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid — after the jump!
When reporters asked what advice he had to offer Melanie, Ne-Yo candidly said, “Make sure that you keep—that big family that she has—keep them close because they’ll keep you grounded. They’ll keep your head right.”
“Yes men, you’ll get no points for those,” he continued. “See what they did to Britney. See what happens.”
Ne-Yo also reflected on his own foundation: “My sister calls me every day and tells me how ugly I am and it keeps my feet on the ground, absolutely.”
After watching so many singers win on multiple televised talent shows, Simon Cowell shared his advice for Melanie with reporters as well: “Remember, it was the fans who got you here. Never forget the fans,” Melanie’s mentor said. “I said that to Kelly Clarkson. I’ve seen people from these shows, one minute they’re ‘Thank you for voting for me,’ next thing, they’re not signing autographs. I don’t buy that kind of behavior. If they’ve made you, you have a debt with them, and it’s long term.”
L.A. Reid also contributed his two cents: ”America got it right,” adds Reid. “My advice to Melanie is save some of that money and don’t turn down a song.”
