Altogether, the US debut of The X Factor was not only overflowing with talent but also with tears and drama: Rachel Crow’s heartbreaking elimination, Drew Ryniewicz’s leave sparking death threats from fans and Melanie Amaro’s exuberant win. However, host Steve Jones received much criticism for not knowing how to properly navigate such an emotional roller coaster; he often came off rude when he rushed judges’ comments and emotional moments. Would longtime spokesperson Vanessa Lachey have done a better job? She confesses that she initially auditioned for the hosting gig!
Steve Jones recently told us in an interview about how his tendency to interrupt has made him appear rude and inconsiderate. When asked what is the toughest part about running the show, he responded, ”I would have to say the time element – getting everything done in the limited time we have. In all honesty, two hours is a long time, but the judges speak endlessly…they are fascinating to watch and listen to, but I have to cut them off, and that’s the most difficult. Everyone at home wants to hear what they are saying, but if I don’t cut them off, the show will just end, with no winner.”
Would Vanessa Lachey have done a better job? Formerly known as Vanessa Minnillo, the newlywed has revealed that she auditioned to host The X Factor’s first season in the US. Though she didn’t get the gig, she doesn’t take the rejection personally at all.
“They went with a British guy. You can’t get more polar opposite, so I am OK with that,” she tells the New York Post. “Now if the host was a brunette girl in her early 30s, I would be like, ‘Wait a minute!’”
Like her husband Nick Lachey, who just finished hosting the third season of The Sing Off, Vanessa is a cohost on ABC’s Wipeout. But now that Steve Jones’ job is reportedly up for grabs, will she be looking to audition again?
“I’m happy where I’m at,” she says.
