TLC’s All-American Muslim To Air 9/11 Anniversary Episode

December 29, 2011 07:46 PM by Ashley Lee

The next chapter of TLC’s controversial reality show All-American Muslim airs this Sunday at 10 p.m., and it may be its most conflicted episode yet: after spending the series peering into the lives of families in the Muslim community of Dearborn, Illinois, the seventh episode features intimate September 11th reflections, ten years after the attacks. Read on for an episode preview and comments from TLC’s general manager, Amy Winter.

According to HuffPost TV, Winter stated that both TLC and the show’s characters wanted to address the topic of 9/11. The show follows several Muslim families living in and around Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit at the heart of one of the largest Arab-American populations outside the Middle East.

“What you’ll see in there is a community with a range of emotions that they express over what was probably one of the most pivotal moments in our nation’s history,” she said. ”I’m very proud of it.”

At the heart of the episode, entitled ‘The Day The World Changed,’ is the pressure for the Muslim community to defend themselves for something they had nothing to do with. Some Dearborn residents visit the September 11 memorial in New York, others attend local anniversary ceremonies. Some refuse to attend anything at all.

“It was the first time I realized that people looked at me as less American,” said Suehaila Amen. “As a person who was born and raised in this country, it was very difficult.”

One woman, Nina Bazzy, angrily expressed that Osama bin Laden made life difficult for many Muslims in the United States: “A real Muslim would not do anything like that…He ruined it for us, he ruined it for our kids. He made us scared in our own homes.”

Unfortunately, ratings for All-American Muslim are considered disappointing for TLC, despite the attention brought to the show by Russell Simmons earlier this year. TLC has not made a decision on the show’s future, and its executives will be meeting soon to consider it for a second season, Winter said.
