When diagnosed with breast cancer two months ago, Giuliana and Bill Rancic took immediate action and remained open about her medical progress. Giuliana just underwent a double mastectomy, and though she is recovering quickly and returned to work on E! News after only two and a half weeks, she testifies to the pain from the surgery: “It was hell, it was horrible.” Read on for a detailed update on Giuliana’s condition and why the couple is actually happy about her initial diagnosis.
Giuliana and Bill Rancic visited the TODAY show with an update on Giuliana’s medical process.
“I feel great,” Giuliana told host Matt Lauer. “I’ve got to be honest. I feel great considering it has only been about two and a half weeks. But I still have a ways to go as far as the recovery.”
Though she’s already back on her feet on the set of E! News, the entire process wasn’t easy.
“It was definitely hard,” she said. “I knew this was going to be a tough surgery. I in no way want to minimize it. Yes, I’m two and a half weeks out, (but) my gosh…up until a week and a half ago, it was hell. It was horrible.”
In addition to post-surgical pain, Giuliana struggled with sickness brought on by the painkillers. Husband Bill Rancic was also asked to, unfortunately, interrupt Giuliana’s rest.
“Well the doctor gave me strict orders and said, ‘By 3 o’clock you have to have her walking around or at least up by the bed.’ And we just did it slowly,” he said. “She was not happy with me, but we did it.” Soon after her first steps around the hospital hallways, “she went up to one of the nurses and said, ‘What’s the record for the most laps around the ward in the hospital?’” Giuliana was happy to brag that she beat the two-lap record by half a lap!
Amidst all the pain of such a personal struggle, why is the couple happy about the diagnosis altogether.
“She wanted to turn the negative into a positive,” Bill explained. “I think the response — the number of people who’ve said, ‘I went and got my first mammogram,’ or ‘My wife got her first mammogram’ — it’s worth it. If you can save one life through this process, you’re turning this negative into an incredible positive.”
