Sure, Isaac Mizrahi has one of the most recognized names in fashion and is one of the new judges on Project Runway: All Stars, but did you also know that he’s married? The designer and his longtime boyfriend Arnold Germer secretly eloped in New York City and is only announcing it publicly now. Read on for more on the emotional “ceremony” from the man who never thought he would wed!
Isaac Mizrahi opened up to talk show host Wendy Williams earlier this week about secretly eloping late last year.
“We’ve been together for six years, but we met ten years ago,” he said. “We didn’t think we wanted to get married until they said we could in New York, and then it was like, ‘We’re getting married!’”
Mizrahi confessed that the couple chose to opt out of an elaborate wedding ceremony in order to avoid all the hoopla. ”People have ideas [about the wedding]: you have to have a series of parties, Vera Wang has to be called…it’s like, start now!” he said. “We were terrified and decided to just elope at City Hall.”
Yet once the time came on November 30th to make it official, he was overcome with emotions. ”I didn’t really expect it to be a ceremony – I thought it was just a bunch of paperwork,” he said. ”Then [the justice of the peace] said, ‘Meet us at the chapel…Do you, Arnold Germer, take…’ and I started sobbing. It was one of those moments [where] I wasn’t expecting that kind of emotional, emotional impact. I think when it’s right, you know it.”
Though his friends and family are a little upset that they were left out of the nuptials, Mizrahi plans on making the couple’s one-year anniversary a celebration to remember. “Yes, I will call Vera Wang and she will do my dress!”
