On last night’s season premiere of Project Runway: All Stars, the designers were asked to create garments inspired by something they’ve already made…but it must be constructed from materials bought at a 99-cent store! Though Elisa Jimenez was the first to be eliminated, Rami Kashou came out on top over Jerell Scott and Mondo Guerra with a garment made of laundry bags, tinsel and umbrella lining, and didn’t feature any of his signature draping. Read on for what he has to say for winning the first challenge of the season!
“Winning the unconventional challenge was really unexpected, but at the same time, it was humbling, it was calming, and I felt like I could just exhale and take a little breath,” said Rami Kashou, after winning the first challenge of the All Stars season.
He won with a structure piece, something that audiences weren’t used to associating with his signature design aesthetic.
“On my last season of Project Runway, I was known for draping, and it’s something that I did and the judges wanted to see different things,” he recalled. “So it’s definitely something that I still love just as equally, but I also want to come into All Stars and show the variety of different things that I’m capable of doing.”
The contestants were asked to bring in a recent design, and then create a new on inspired by the original but made from items purchased at a 99-cent store…a challenge that not every designer can rise to.
“It’s difficult to make sleeves and collars out of these materials that…they’re not bendable easily and they don’t take the shape of fabric easily, so I wanted to show skill and effort into sculpting a jacket out of plastic, really.” he said. “I feel like this is jumping outside the box for me, I want to show versatility as a designer because feel like its really important to present that kind of work.”
Rami presented a tweed-like outfit made of laundry bags, tinsel and umbrella lining, and it won over the show’s new panel of judges.
“Once the judges announced that I won the challenge, I’m relieved, it’s kind of bizarre because I felt a lot of pressure,” he said, since he won the unconventional challenge in his original season, which was won overall by Christian Siriano. “I was not expecting to win to be honest because, well I won that same challenge before, so I never thought I was going to win it. So it was surprising but it was just a humbling, calming, sort of like, off the hook type of feeling.”
