Kelly Clarkson’s Politics Boost Album Sales, Cause Controversy

January 08, 2012 10:52 AM by Shayla Perry

Good news and bad news for American Idol alum and Voice mentor Kelly Clarkson. Her latest album, Stronger, experienced a slight jump in sales on Amazon after the singer endorsed Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul on Twitter. Since then, however, Clarkson has found herself having to defend her politics, with some fans accusing her of supporting racism, the death penalty, and opposing same-sex marriage.

With a slight jump in sales and a climb from No. 39 to No. 17 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, you’d think that Kelly Clarkson would be spending her days celebrating the recent success of Stronger. Instead, it seems that the FOX reality star is caught in the middle of a political firestorm.

What happened? It all started on Twitter….

“I love Ron Paul,” Kelly recently tweeted. “I liked him a lot during the last Republican nomination and no one gave him a chance. If he wins the nomination for the Republican party in 2012 he’s got my vote. Too bad he probably won’t.”

Though her comments got her some support on Amazon and a number of new Twitter followers, Clarkson also received a bit of backlash from fans – er, former fans – who accused her of supporting racism and blasted her for endorsing a candidate they say is for the death penalty and opposes same-sex marriage. (For information on where Ron Paul stands on these issues, you can check out his campaign website here.)

Kelly, who’ll be featured as a mentor this season on NBC‘s The Voice, took to her WhoSay page to address all of the buzz:

“Man, my eyes have been opened to so much hate tonight. If y’all ever disagree with something I say, please don’t feel the need to attack me. I will listen to what you say and any articles of viewpoints you have when you say it with respect. Being hateful is not a healthy way to get people to see or hear you.

“If you don’t agree with me simply unfollow me,” she added. “It’s really that easy.”

No problem with who she endorses or likes for a candidate, that is called “freedom.” Problem I have is the reasons she said she liked him are all but one opposite of his published platform. That causes me to call into question exactly what is going on with this endorsement.

That is stupid, Ron Paul is against the death penalty because its usually the poor minorities that are put in the chair and not rich white people.

Ron Paul said personally he believes a marriage is between a man and a woman but he said he would let the states decide what they want. Basically like that whole prop 8 deal we had in california.

And he is obviously not a racist, he is the only one that will help minorities while the rest of the candidates will send them to wars.

Even if you don’t like Ron Paul, what does it matter if someone said they like their ideas?

Ron Paul’s foreign policy is naive and dangerous plus at 76 he’s older than John McCain when he ran in 2008. It goes to show that wisdom doesn’t necessarily come with age.

saw her on snl last night and though i am a staunch democrat, she is beautiful and sang wonderfully. by the way, as a democrat, i am a strong believer in the death penalty, though i heartily support same sex marriage and women’s health rights.

Good for her. It’s funny (not “ha-ha” funny) that while you have the right to your opinion, the Internet lackeys don’t respect it. I think that comes from the lack of a face-to-face aspect of it. I like Ron Paul as well, but I’m not going to defend my position… I don’t have to. It goes without saying that Kelly C. doesn’t, either.

While the ‘Net has been really, really useful, it’s been really, really negative as well.

wow!! I like her response to all the hate. finally, some celebrity who can stand up to the crowd. some other celebrity would have started apologising for having an opinion that’s different from the masses (by masses, I really mean the democrats)
too bad I don’t have twitter, I’d have followed her right away!!

If Kelly’s liberal “fans” are willing to abandon her because she supports Ron Paul, then screw ALL of them! She should be able to endorse anyone she wants, as a free American citizen.

The Mainstream media builds things. As you know by now, the elites who are part of the Feds do not want Ron Paul in because he will not be the puppet they want him to be.

I am sorry your being harrased about about Ron Paul. I am for Ron Paul. People dont see these well rehearsed neocons.

Your sales are down just like everyone elses because its after Christmas.

I don’t like the antisemitic Ron Paul but Kelly can like him all she wants. That is her business.

She sounds like a very level-headed entertainer. That is rare.

You should edit this becauuse somethings aren’t correct. Ron Paul opposes the death penalty and thinks the states should decide on same sex marriage. As for the newsletter, it isn’t something recently acknowledged that they were written by someone else, he said it for 20 years.

  13. DTM Says:

It is absolutely untrue that Ron Paul is opposed to same-sex marriages. He is one of the strongest defenders of civil liberties in our contry today. Paul has stated he doesn’t want to interfere in the free association of two individuals in a social, sexual, and religious sense. Additionally, when asked if he was supportive of gay marriage Paul responded “I am supportive of all voluntary associations and people can call it whatever they want.”
If you look at how he has voted or listened to him speak publicly any at all for the past 20 years, you would laugh at claims that he is racist. It’s all media driven BS.

Interesting that a celeberity comments about liking a REPUBLICAN and sales go down and when a celeberity not only comments about, but endorces a LIBERAL DEMOCRAT they gain popularity and sales go up? Wonder why this is?

  15. Jared Says:
    January 9th, 2012 at 8:41 am

I love it. If you support a Republican then you support racism. If you ever want to see a hate filled group of people just look at the Democratic party, Labor Unions, and Occupy Wall Street to see how angry these people really are. You can’t reason with them because they will just call you names and a racist.

Those “fans” that are harrassing her are not fans but democrat welfare cases that don’t matter anyway. If Kelly Clarkson is a true American, she will support the death penalty, oppose same-sex marriage. Those who accuse her of racism are just all the niggeros who believe anyone who doesn’t agree with the terrorist obama is a racist and they should be disregarded as non-people. Good Job Kelly!

  17. Steve Says:
    January 9th, 2012 at 11:30 am

Ron Paul is NOT racist (they have uncovered the author of the articles in question.) Ron Paul is AGAINST the death penalty. Ron Paul wants the Government OUT of your bedroom. He believes it’s not the governments business who you marry. Why not include that in your article, instead of insinuating otherwise by making it seem that MS. Clarkson has to defend racism, death penalty and anti-gay marriage? Your writing style is typical of the misleading sensationalism we have come to expect. You are a failure as a reporter Ms. Perry.

  18. CRobertson Says:
    January 9th, 2012 at 12:01 pm

She could not possibly know all about his beliefs. That is the problem with most young Ron Paul supporters. They just like the sound bites and never do the research required to be an informed voter. There is a lot to like about Ron Paul, but very scary the unlikable beliefs.

Whew! SO glad I hadn’t bought any of her music yet!

  20. Roxanna Logeais Says:

Kelly Clarkson’s music has nothing to do with her supporting Ron Paul and we shouldn’t post anything mean about her because I agree with her when she said that being hateful is not a healthy way to hear you or see you. I still like listening to her music because it is something that anybody out there can relate to.
