Are The Voice coaches going to be channeling Simon Cowell this season? Find out what Christina Aguilera and Adam Levine say fans can expect to see when the NBC singing competition returns for Season 2.
“This year, we are diving more into critiquing,” Christina Aguilera tells reporters at NBC‘s Winter TV Preview of The Voice’s return to primetime. “You see us more in depth in the coaching process. … I think this year you’re going to see it more. Last year we were all finding our own comfort zone.”
But for those worried that things will get a little Simon-esque, Adam Levine assures us that it’s all in the spirit of constructive criticism.
“There’s a difference between critical and willfully just mean,” says Levine. “There’s a constructive way to tell someone they weren’t as good as they could have been. Telling someone they were terrible doesn’t get us anywhere.”
And according to the coaches, the talent in Season 2 is so phenomenal, there’s no need for the nastiness. “It made our jobs really difficult because everybody was really, really good,” the Maroon 5 frontman reveals.
Of course, as in the first season of the hit singing competition, the coaches save the harshest words for one another. The “family bantering and bickering,” as Aguilera calls it, is all in good fun though.
And this season, some new members of the family are being added. The network recently announced that each coach will bring on two mentors or advisers to help their team members during the Battle Rounds (up from one in season 1). Lionel Richie, Jewel, Ne-Yo, Babyface, Miranda Lambert, Kelly Clarkson, Alanis Morisette, and Robin Thicke have all been tapped to work with the talent.
Season 2 of The Voice premieres Sunday, February 5th on NBC, right after the Super Bowl.
