Sure, So You Think You Can Dance will no longer have a weekly results show, but the show’s ninth season marks the beginning of a brand new format: a two-hour episode, every single week! Read on for details on how the dance competition series is set to make a big comeback, and how having less shows per week actually puts them on the air longer.
“We’re rejiggering the format on Dance, and already we have people saying, ‘How is that going to work?’” said FOX entertainment president Kevin Reilly at the Television Critics Association.
So You Think You Can Dance will air once weekly, in a two-hour format, with the results layered into the elongated episode. This decision actually pushes the episodes into the summer as well.
“We just thought creatively,” continued Reilly. “I think it’s a nice change of format…we want to get a few more shows on in the summer.”
The new format was not a decision pushed specifically by ratings, which have been decreasing season by season. Instead, FOX executives say they felt viewers were more responsive to the two-hour episodes in the past.
“Some of the purists may say, ‘Oh, I wanted a dedicated night [for the results],’ but I think it’s going to make the show itself more exciting,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a fun experiment. I know the producers are excited about it. I think the fans are going to like it.”
What do you think of SYTYCD episodes being two hours long? Would you rather have the show air twice a week like it used to?
