When the cast of Dancing With The Stars’ most recent season was announced, even the show’s most loyal fans were disappointed by the “celebrity” lineup. Though its ratings suffered, the season proved to be surprisingly exciting, all the way up to the final episode that awarded J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff with the signature Mirror Ball trophy…it’s this kind of revitalization that encouraged ABC to say that DWTS will remain on the air for many years to come! Read on for the network’s key secret to the show’s success.
“I personally think Dancing With the Stars has many many more years to come,” commented ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee at the Television Critics Association press tour. “That show refreshes itself.”
He acknowledged that though “celebrity” casting has not been consistent throughout the seasons, it is the key to the show’s success.
“Obviously each year the casting kind of tells you where it [will] come out,” said Lee. “We thought we started with a weaker cast this year, and then look what J.R. [Martinez] did.”
He notes that audiences have received unconventional stars like the winner, Martinez, just as well as those who fit the more traditional definition of “celebrity.”
“Sometimes its controversial, like Bristol Palin, sometimes it’s somebody who brings a nostalgic element, and sometimes its someone people just love — like Kirstie Alley.”
But after so many seasons, have they run short of celebrities to pull from?
“When you look back at the early seasons, the level of celebrity isn’t what it is now.”
What do you think of the recent DWTS casts? Who would you like to see on the ballroom floor?
