Paula Deen confirmed this morning that she has been living with Type 2 Diabetes for the past three years now, but that’s not the only announcement she’s making lately. The indulgent Food Network chef and upcoming participant in Who Do You Think You Are? is collaborating with drug maker Novo Nordisk to launch Diabetes in a New Light, an online program for those also struggling with diabetes. Read on for how she’s hoping to take a stand and what membership in the program includes.
“I could’ve walked out and said, ‘Hey y’all, I have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes,’ and walked away,” she said on the TODAY show this morning. She added to People, ”But having given myself time to work with my family, talk with my family, now I feel like I have something to bring to the table.”
“I was determined to share my positive approach and not let diabetes stand in the way of enjoying my life,” Deen said in a release for Diabetes in a New Light. ”I’m excited to team up with Novo Nordisk on this initiative to show others that managing diabetes does not have to stop you from enjoying the things you love.”
The Diabetes in a New Light website states that “registering with the Diabetes in a New Light program is like filling your pantry with tools that may help you successfully manage your type 2 diabetes.” Membership in the program includes “an informative newsletter chock full of recipes for diabetes-friendly foods that everyone will love, ideas to help you better manage your diabetes, cooking tips from Bobby and Jamie Deen, [and] ways to work with your doctor to explore a treatment plan that works for you.”
Deen sees the partnership announcement as a stance of strength, and hopes to help others.
“I said, ‘The one thing that I think endeared me to so many people is I’ve been in very hopeless situations,’ ” Deen also told People. “I had to really get myself into a place when I made the announcement. I would come with information, and I would be armed to be able to help others.”
Deen also revealed that she takes Victoza, a once-daily, non-insulin injection, and continues to “make lifestyle adjustments, including lightened-up versions of her favorite recipes” that are included in the online program.
What do you think of Paula Deen’s new online program? Will it be helpful for those who have diabetes?
