This week on an all new episode of Tabatha Takes Over, Tabatha Coffey tackles her first non-salon – Club Ripples, Long Beach’s oldest gay bar and dance club. Find out everything you missed after the jump!
Tonight on Bravo, Tabatha Coffey heads to Long Beach to meet John and Larry, partners in life and business, and the owners of Club Ripples.
In its glory day, Club Ripples was the place to be, but 38 years later, Long Beach’s oldest gay bar and dance club has lost its edge…and customers; mostly because of the owners’ bad business practices.
Referred to by their own staff as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, John and Larry have two very different management styles, with John being very hands-on, and Larry verrrrry hands-off. As in watching the bar from his laptop at home kind of hands-off.
During their conversation, Tabatha learns that John’s bank account is overdrawn by about $15,000, and the two have tens of thousands more in credit card debt. But the money is only the tip of the iceberg.
An empty bar that charges a $7 cover (which customers often ask to have refunded as soon as they walk in), serves alcohol in plastic cups, and refuses to give customers tap water…. Not exactly the formula for success.
When meeting with the staff, Tabatha learns that it’s John and Larry’s snippy ways that are keeping the customers away. No handbags or drinks on the dance floor. No hands in the pockets…No fun!
For a little inspiration, Tabatha takes the Ripples staff to one of the most popular gay bars in the area, The Abbey. As part of their learning experience, the bar staff gets a primer in Margarita Making 101, and Larry and John learn a thing or two about running a successful bar without all of the rules.
Later, back at Club Ripples, Tabatha hits John and Larry with some hard truths in the form of online reviews. Really, really bad online reviews.
The customers’ words open up John and Larry’s eyes though, and they’re ready to make some changes.
But first…some fun!
To show their staff some long overdue appreciation, John and Larry treat them to a day of bumper cars. Then, it’s back to work.
Immediately, they literally bust open the suggestion box that’s been there for YEARS, and then start working on creating a signature drink for the bar’s re-open.
Now that they’ve settled on a signature cocktail, it’s time to unveil Club Ripples’ new signature style.
What a difference!
With a new look and new rules, John, Larry, and the rest of the Ripples crew are ready to re-open and reintroduce the bar to the Long Beach community.
And to help with that introduction, Tabatha connects John and Larry with an organization for gay business owners in the Long Beach area, to help get the word out about the new and improved Club Ripples.
For her Final Recommendations, in addition to changing their work habits and ditching the Big Brother-style surveillance cameras, Tabatha suggests that Larry and John hire Ken as General Manager, and Nicole as a Shift Manager, with Jen (creator of the signature cocktail) taking over as Bar Manager to keep things running smoothly; hopefully for many more years to come.
