Last week’s challenge to create opera couture had nothing on tonight’s episode of Project Runway All Stars: the seasoned designers step up their game for a childhood icon, Miss Piggy! Who will return to the runway next week and who is now gone from All Stars for good? Read on for the recap, complete with forming feuds in the workroom and a fight between guest judge Eric Daman and the esteemed Muppet on the runway!
This week’s challenge: design a cocktail dress for high-profile celebrity Miss Piggy to wear while promoting her latest feature film, The Muppets. The contestants put their own twist on the challenge: Mondo Guerra assumes that Miss Piggy grew up in the sixties and designs a groovy outfit while Austin Scarlett sews satin skin tight. ”In many ways, we are kindred spirits,” says Austin of he and Miss Piggy. “I myself like to pepper my conversation with French phrases, I like to refer to myself as ‘moi!’”
Not everyone is as successful in the workroom, as Gordana Gehlhausen makes a formless frock that’s all too reminiscent of a nightgown. ”I don’t think comfort when you’re dressing a mega-celebrity like Miss Piggy should be an issue,” Joanna Coles says to Gordana.
“How does a pig feel about wearing a giraffe print?” Joanna asks Kenley Collins. Though Kenley is always laughing loudly and asking for advice from Kara Janx, but she’s making enemies in the workroom like she did during her season. Mila calls her relationships with Kara codependent, and April Johnston doesn’t admire her design aesthetic. ”It’s just like the other dresses she’s done, but in giraffe print.”
That’s not the only feud forming in the workroom: on runway day, Austin unknowingly picks the exact same accessories that Kara picked out yesterday, pieces that Austin claims Kara didn’t claim. “Alright Kara, this is like the second time that you’ve stolen my accessories!” Austin says.
Judge Isaac Mizrahi is out for this episode, so the second guest judge is the Emmy-winning stylist for Sex and the City and Gossip Girl, Eric Daman! Gorgeous cocktail dresses head down the runway, fit for both a pig and an avid fashionista. For some reason, April’s dress doesn’t translate; but Mondo reaffirms to himself, I have no doubt in my mind that I’m going to be in the top three.” (Sadly, he walks away safe!)
Inevitably, the pig puns begin: Anthony Williams confesses, ”I was about to eat a piece of bacon this morning but I felt so convicted…I already feel bad about all her children that I’ve eaten in the past!” and Jerell Scott says, ”Her bacon is gonna SIZZLE when she see’s my work!” Eric jokes that a dress is “Parisian hog couture” and finally, Miss Piggy has had enough and takes a dig at him as well.
Rami’s polka dotted cocktail dress is in the top three, of course. Miss Piggy raves, “This is the most daring outlandish thing I’ve ever seen. I love it! It looks like a candy store exploded.” Michael Costello is also at the top. “I love that dress, it looks like a present,” says Miss Piggy. “A present for Kermy!”
Kenley’s giraffe-printed dress rounds out the top three, complete with a voluminous headpiece that the judges joke will hide Miss Piggy’s ears nicely. Miss Piggy digs back, “After a big night on the town, I can just go home and use the hat to clean my pots and pans.” However, the judges also notice that the cut and construction of the neckline is impractical and inappropriate.
Unsurprisingly, Gordana is in the bottom three. Host Angela Lindvall comments, “She’s premiering a huge film, it might be a little understated,” and designer judge Georgina Chapman tells Miss Piggy, “It’s not gonna flatter your curves.” Mila’s mod frock stands next to Gordana’s; Miss Piggy jokes, ”It was very retro, but it was kind of goth. Yes, yes, maybe a good Halloween costume!”
Last episode’s winner is also in the bottom, due to unfortunate color choices and unflattering construction, and a pair of bows on the hips. Miss Piggy observes, “I’m not really sure if it’s a functional dress, I mean can you hula hoop in that?”
Finally, Miss Piggy announces the challenge winner. “The winning designer is someone who made a fabulous dress for a fabulous model, and that someone is…wait for it…that someone is Michael!
Whose time on Project Runway All Stars is over? It’s the end of the runway for Gordana. She leaves just shy of next week’s six-hour challenge that features designer Diane Von Furstenberg and model Miranda Kerr!
