Paula Deen Claims To Donate Sponsorship Money To American Diabetes Association

January 21, 2012 12:00 PM by Ashley Lee

Paula Deen met tons of criticism when she announced earlier this week that she had secretly been fighting Type 2 Diabetes and was launching a sponsored program called Diabetes In A New Light. The decadent Food Network chef, who will appear on Who Do You Think You Are?, claims to be donating to the American Diabetes Association. But is she really?

Paula Deen elaborated on her health condition relative to her eating habits on ABC’s The Chew.

“I’ve always said moderation,” Deen said. “I don’t eat every day the way that you see me cook on that show. It’s 30 days out of my life. And it’s for your entertainment.”

She started to get emotional about the announcement. “We have to be responsible for ourselves,” she said between tears. “When my life is over and you hear my name, I hope you associate the word ‘hope’ with it.

As the new face of Novo Nordisk’s Diabetes In A New Light, she explained that she’ll be donating part of her sponsorship compensation to the American Diabetes Association.

“Naturally, I am being compensated and my children are being compensated, because we like everybody else have to work.”

However, at the time of Dean’s appearance, the ADA had yet to hear about Deen’s philanthropic intentions. Yet the Association said it supports Deen’s diabetes disclosure.

“People may benefit from seeing how others successfully manage Type 2 diabetes,” said ADA spokesperson Geralyn Spollett. “Paula Deen, through her work with Diabetes in a New Light, is likely to inspire many people living with Type 2 diabetes to take a more positive approach to their diabetes care.”

Spollett added: “We commend her for speaking out on behalf of people with Type 2 diabetes and welcome her to the association’s Stop Diabetes movement.”
