Tonight on FOX, the auditions for Season 11 of American Idol continue. Host Ryan Seacrest, and judges Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson, and Jennifer Lopez are in San Diego, California where tens of thousands of hopefuls have gathered. Keep reading to find out who Steven Tyler calls the ‘best male voice they’ve heard yet’, and which celebrity’s daughter drops in to try out…
American Idol auditions kick off in San Diego with Ryan and the judges standing on the deck of the USS Midway, which is docked in the harbor – 74,000 tons of American steel – sexy!
Auditions are actually being held on the aircraft carrier. The first contestant, a young woman who is sure to note that she’s a patriot, is wearing a strapless bikini top and barely-there bottoms. She sings, and Tyler observes that her voice lacks the fire of her get-up. She insists on making matters worse by attempting a Mariah Carey song (why?!) – and then she’s gone.
The next young woman is a mom and an accountant – she’s also wearing more clothes than the previous hopeful. Ashley Robles sings a Whitney Houston tune which elicits an ‘Oh yeah!’ from Steven, and applause from all three. She”s impressive. They tell her she’s going to be big – and it’s a unanimous ‘yes’!
Jayrah Gibson’s life goal is to win American Idol. His audition is a step in the right direction. All three judges enjoy it. Randy feels he’d make a good R&B artist – he’s through.
When the next hopeful speaks on camera, she muffs the show’s name – seems she actually wants to be on America’s Top Model! Aubree Dieckmeyer’s voice sounds natural and sweet, though, and the judges give her a golden ticket.
It’s shaping up to be a predominantly girls’ night on American Idol. Ali Shields is a giddy type, who once managed to get herself on The Ellen Degeneres Show, and got a kiss from Usher in a red carpet situation. But does she have what it takes to get the golden ticket? Her audition is more interesting than astounding, but it’s a yes!
Day two brings frat boy, Kyle Crews, who is anxious to see JLo, and dedicates his audition song to her. He’s got the voice to back up his charm – Tyler says it’s the best male voice they’ve heard yet – he’s going to Hollywood.
The most entertaining part of the show (sorry singers) is the blooper reels in which the loud ships’ horns and fighter jets shock the judges repeatedly (plenty of cursing from Steven) and drown out the contestants – umm, did anyone scout out this location beforehand? Hilarious!
Jane Carrey, comedian/actor Jim Carrey’s daughter, is another noteworthy audition. JLo remembers Jane when she was a baby and Jennifer was a Flygirl – suddenly Jennifer feels her age. Anyway, Jane sings a country tune and sounds good. The judges see potential, but give her a few tips to improve before putting her through. She happily calls up dad afterward, who declares it’s going to be an exciting year.
Roughly five more girls go through before the final audition – Wolf. Yes, he howls. Plus, he looks like a throwback to the 1950′s with the greased back hair and blue mechanic’s shirt. He’s a character. It turns out Jason Hamlin actually is a mechanic who maintains golf course equipment. He started singing three years ago with his late father’s guitar (he was a guitar maker). Jason sings Midnight Special and Steven asks for another song – he serves up some Johnny Cash while playing his ‘guitfiddle’ – that does the trick. Wolf ‘s going to Hollywood.
53 in total go through from the San Diego auditions!
