American Idol’s David Archuleta Starts Acting In The Philippines

January 27, 2012 01:00 PM by Ashley Lee

What’s up with David Archuleta these days? Though the American Idol finalist was dropped from his record label almost a year ago, he’s got big plans coming up: he’s filming a new miniseries and will take a two-year sabbatical. Read on for the details on his upcoming schedule, and a peek into how he prepared for his first lead role.

Archuleta has already on location for his acting gig: the Philippines! He is set to star in a miniseries as Josh, a Filipino-American singer who returns to his native country. He will be singing the Filipino theme song and shooting in the Philippines for an intense three weeks. According to Spot.ph, this is one of his final commitments before taking a sabbatical from the public eye to fulfill a two-year proselytizing mission for his church.

So how did he prepare for his first lead role?

“I sort of took (a class) in New York before I came over here,” he said in an interview. “The lady that I worked with was great. She helped me kind of loosen up. It made me look forward to doing this and that it’ll be fun…She just really taught me (that) instead of how people sometimes get caught in reading the lines, saying the lines, and acting out the lines, she focused on how I could relate to what the words were even if it wasn’t me. For the most part, the character I’m playing is very much me, which is nice, but there are parts where you have to pretend. So how can you still put yourself in there? How can you still connect? She was great at teaching me to find exercises on how to do that.”

Archuleta never really saw himself pursuing acting and isn’t sure if he will necessarily do so as a second career. ”You never know. I never saw myself doing that but just like anything, it opens a door. Let’s see what comes,” he said. “It’s interesting to see what my thoughts are on acting after this experience because this will be my first. I did do iCarly and Hannah Montana, but it was really short, very brief. I just had to be myself.”

In Archie’s defense, he left his label voluntarily because Jive was melting down (and was dissolved 6 months after he left). He really did.

But a member of his management team (whom he left at the same time) Tweeted vindictively that he’s been “dropped”.

    Nice business.

To clarify, David fulfilled his 3 album obligation to Jive and chose to leave the label. He was offered a new contract.

David was not dropped from his label. When his contract expired, they gave him some options for new contracts, which he declined. He has been busy since his season of Idol. I’m a dedicated fan who will be anxious for his return to the stage and recording studio.

David was not dropped by Jive Records. They gave him some options to stay with them, and he decided that wasn’t the direction he wanted to go with his music. Good decision. There is NO Jive Records anymore.
David is quite smart. He thinks things through and asks for guidance from God.
He has my support for as long as he needs it, and then some…

As I understand it, David left Jive, his former record label because they were doing nothing for him. Also, I think that label is now defunct. Please check it out.

Hope David will be great in this mini-series. He deserves to be successful. Such a great guy and wonderful singer. It will be a great send off as he leaves for his mission. I’m alread looking forward to his return.

David left his record label after he completed his 3 album contract. And the label was falling apart – a lot of management jumped ship when American Idol aligned with a different record company. Some of the management that left were the ones David worked for. David said in his video blog that he had offers from Sony to stay but he did not take them. He felt he was changing and the label had changed and it wasn’t a good fit anymore. And David also decided 2 years ago when he turned 19 that he wanted to go on a full-time Mormon mission (which should be started by age 21) so he was not signing up for any new long term contracts.

I can’t wait to see Nandito Ako and also hear the theme song Nandito Ako sung by David in Tagalog, and I heard he will also record an English version.
