Alex Da Silva, a former choreographer of So You Think You Can Dance, received his sentence for multiple accounts of rape and assault. What will the man who was repeatedly crowned the World Salsa Champion face for his charges from 2009? Read on for the details…it’s not pretty!
Earlier today, former SYTYCD choreographer was sentenced to ten years in prison for raping a female student and assaulting another. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
It’s been some time since he was convicted to receive his sentence: last September, a Los Angeles jury convicted him of the forcible rape of a 22-year-old woman in August 2002, as well as assaulting a 25-year-old with the intent to rape in March 2009. Both counts were part of a series of charges, alleging that Da Silva sexually assaulted four different women during private lessons over a span of six years.
The panel deadlocked on four other counts, including an additional charge from the March 2009 attack and the alleged rapes of two other women in 2004 and 2005. If found guilty, he would’ve found himself facing jail for life.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Kathleen Kennedy formally dismissed those counts today. She commented that Da Silva “does not respect women” and “believes he is entitled to do whatever he wants when he wants.”
Alex Da Silva is skilled in Mambo, Salsa, Argentine Tango and Swing dancing. Da Silva is the 2002 and 2005 World Salsa Champion and has worked with Jennifer Lopez, Will Smith, Puff Daddy and Enrique Iglesias. He has choreographed commercials for Burger King and Coca-Cola.
