Last night’s season premiere of The Voice felt like an elongated teaser—only five blind auditions! Tonight’s two-hour block kicked off with a rock ‘n’ roll Prince medley; read on for the full recap to see who rocked the blind auditions for a spot on a team with either Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green or Christina Aguilera.
After the coaches perform a tribute of Prince’s greatest hits, the first blind audition begins with Hailey Steele and Leland Grant, coupled up (platonic only!) as the country duo, The Line. They each pull out their guitars for a rendition of “American Girl” that has Blake turning before the second voice debuts! Once the audience starts clapping along, the rest of the judges buy into their upbeat energy and turn their chairs as well. Every judge hilariously presents their case as the best coach for the duo, but the two choose Christina (which, in my opinion, is a bad choice. We’ll see how that turns out.). Blake Shelton agrees with me: “I think they were pulled by flash…and boobs.”
Jamar Rogers, a former drug addict who is HIV-positive and volunteering in New York, is excited to perform “Seven Nation Army” for his idol, Cee Lo. Christina nudges Cee Lo to push the button, and after a few phrases of debate, he does and is welcome by Jamar’s spontaneous fan-boy confession to his new coach! Adam comments, “This is a match made in heaven, you remind me of each other.”
Gwen Sebastian puts her plans to start a family on hold and auditions with “Stay.” Blake turns his chair first; Cee Lo and Adam follow suit. Blake hopes he doesn’t lose another country singer to a fellow coach: “If you look across this panel, you’ll see spikes and things like that; I’m your country guy.” Gwen becomes Blake’s second team member.
Kim Yarbrough auditions for the show at fifty years old with “Tell Me Something Good” and Adam corrects her saying, “Your name is Chaka Khan, baby!” Blake digs at Christina, saying that Adam’s the one who won the entire competition last season. The argument works, and Kim chooses Adam.
Angie Johnson, a staff sergeant whose video went viral on YouTube, takes the stage with “Heartbreaker” and Cee Lo turns his chair. “Are you as beautiful as I think you are?” jokes Cee Lo. “She belongs to me!”
Lindsay Pavao auditions with rocker version of “Say Aah” and Christina, Cee Lo and Blake all turn to rave about both her voice and her hairstyle. Though she reminds me of both Xenia and Vicki from first season, Lindsay chooses Christina. Dang, the boys can’t catch a break against team Xtina!
Jermaine Paul, a former background vocalist for Alicia Keys, found out about the show from his daughter and hopes to impress with “Complicated.” Cee Lo turns and commented, “Even with my back turned, I could feel the swag…” Jermaine starts bargaining with Cee Lo and Blake about whether he will be “kept” on a team, and why Blake turned around after Cee Lo did. After much deliberation, Jermaine joins Blake’s team.
Angel Taylor draws from her dark past when she auditions with “Someone Like You,” and all three male judges turn their chairs. After confessing that she has a huge crush on Blake, Adam again gloats his win from last season…and Angel ends up siding with Adam!
The coaches’ teams aren’t even close to full yet; tune in next week for more blind auditions!
