February 13, 2012 10:00 AM by Veronica Dudo

A new season of American is currently underway with a lot of changes from its debut but one thing remains the same: the dozens of aspiring young artists all hoping to become a star. That’s a dream Katharine McPhee once had. She was the runner up on the fifth season of American Idol in 2006. She lost the FOX reality TV series to Taylor Hicks but that hasn’t stopped the singing sensation. With the debut of Smash, NBC’s new musical drama McPhee is back in the spotlight!

The scripted series from Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, celebrates all of the excitement and heartache of the Broadway Theater. It follows the “dreamers and schemers” who all want to make it big and become a “Smash.” The series focuses on a songwriting duo that creates a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe.

In an interview with GQ magazine, McPhee explains how women can get their guys to watch Smash. “Listen, I go see all the guy movies, so now I know I love them. But you have to be open to it. I would say to the girlfriends out there: Just nail him down, make him watch an episode with you.”

A Los Angeles native, McPhee has been singing since the age of two. Now, she’s using her celebrity status to help those in need. McPhee has teamed up with Malaria No More in an effort to end malaria related deaths in Africa by 2015.
