The Amazing Race Recap: Season 20 Premiere

February 19, 2012 07:52 PM by Lisa Princ

CBSAmazing Race returned tonight with the season 20 premiere. Among the eleven teams competing for the $1 million prize were Big Brother winner Rachel Reilly and her fiancé Brendon Villegas. They may have ruled Big Brother, but how did they handle the pressure of this intense race? Read on for all the highlights!

The Amazing Race returned tonight with the season 20 premiere, and before the race could begin, we got to meet the new contestants. Big Brother winner Rachel Reilly and her fiancé Brendon Villegas definitely made their presence known, and Rachel let us know right off the bat that she was not out to make friends. I am not convinced that Rachel is anywhere as annoying as Joey “Fitness” Lasalla and Danny Horal however, who left us feeling like we were watching Jersey Shore.

For their first race, host Phil Keoghan announced that the winner of tonight’s leg, would win the express pass, while the last team would be sent home. For their first clue, the teams had to rummage through over 100 mini hot air balloons, and only 11 of them contained clues. Rachel and Brendon were one of the first teams to find the clues, along with border patrol agents, Art Velez and J.J. Carrell, as well Dave and Rachel Brown, a married couple looking to reconnect through The Amazing Race. The first six teams to finish were given a direct flight to Argentina, where they would continue their search for clues.

While Brendon and Rachel, and five other teams were headed to Argentina, we watched as the remaining five teams struggled to find the clues. William “Bopper” Minton and Mark Jackson struggled as they tried not get sick, but we couldn’t help but feel sorry for these two, as they shared their tale of poverty. Meanwhile, sisters, Misa and Maiya Tanaka were the last to find the clue – something tells me these two are not going to last very long. It didn’t matter much at this point though, as these teams were all going to be arriving in Argentina a few hours behind the others.

Once in Argentina, The Amazing Race teams had to go skydiving for their next clue – well, actually only one person from each team took the jump, while the other had to figure out where their partner would land. Art Velez and J.J. Carrell, along with Rachel and Dave Brown, and Rachel and Brendon were all the first ones to complete this clue as well, while those who came in later, once again, seemed to struggle. Misa and Maiya Tanaka were in last place as one sister wound up getting stuck in a sand dune. We also comically watched as Danny Horal struggled to drive a stick shift – seriously, who doesn’t know how to drive a stick?

Next, the teams needed to make empanadas, but not just any empanadas, they needed to be perfect. Each team needed to make 60 meat filled empanadas, and 60 cheese filled empanadas. The border patrol agents struggled immensely with this task, while Rachel and Brandon seemed to have a good edge on this one. But what they did not expect was having the empanada Nazi checking them over! Despite the fact that Rachel and Brendon, as well as Art and J.J. started first, it was actually Rachel and Dave Brown who ended up making perfect empanadas quicker. Rachel and Dave scurried to find Phil, and luckily for them, they were the first ones finished, and the winner of the express pass! Rachel and Brendon finished up second, followed by Art and J.J.

While some were already done, others were just starting to make empanadas. It seemed to be a close race between the remaining teams, but then one by one, they all finished up and it was only Misa and Maiya, and Joey “Fitness” Lasalla and Danny Horal left fighting for their survival. Misa and Maiya finished up first, so we thought that the Jersey Shore wannabe buddies would be going home, but in one of the dumbest things we have ever seen on The Amazing Race, Misa and Maiya completely missed Phil, when he was right within their view. In the end, it cost them the race, as Joey and Danny managed to get to Phil first, and the sisters were eliminated!
