Former Amazing Race producer Jeff Rice was found dead in Uganda on Friday, February 17, and as family members seek answers surrounding the Oklahoma native’s mysterious death, some suspect foul play. What happened? Was Jeff Rice murdered?
Paul Blackman, Rice’s brother-in-law, tells MSNBC that poisoning is suspected in the death of the 39-year-old father of two, but as of now, nothing is certain, and those reports have yet to be confirmed.
“We’ve sent people up there to get some answers,” says Blackman. “Nothing is finalized yet.”
“I don’t know where they are getting this ‘definitely poisoned’ thing,” he adds, addressing media coverage of the producer’s death. “There’s so much stuff in the air about possible poisoning, all that kind of stuff. At the moment, we’re trying to get Jeff’s body out of there to get some answers.”
Rice’s assistant has also fallen ill, and was taken to a hospital in Uganda for treatment.
Jeff Rice began working in television three years ago, running SB Productions with his wife, Sally Rice. According to Blackman, the former Amazing Race (CBS) and Whale Wars (Animal Planet) producer was in Uganda working on either a future show or documentary and held dual citizenship in the U.S. and South Africa.
“He was a fantastic producer apparently, a very, very sought-after producer,” says Blackman. “The messages [of condolence] coming in have been very, very good actually. It’s been fantastic, he’s a very well-liked character. He was a good guy, very relaxed and just a very good guy.”
