Project Runway All Stars Recap: All Stars & Stripes

February 23, 2012 10:08 PM by Shayla Perry

Tonight on Lifetime, after last week’s Broadway themed challenge, the designers find themselves at the United Nations, fashioning looks out of what else, but flags. Which contestants will make the cut? Find out everything you missed on tonight’s Project Runway All Stars after the jump.

With Kara Janx eliminated, Austin Scarlett and Mila Hermanovski are worried that they’ll have a hard time finding inspiration throughout the remainder of the competition. But there’s no time to dwell on things, as the show must go on.

For the details of their next challenge, the contestants meet at the United Nations, surrounded by the flags of 193 countries. Tonight, they will be designing dresses influenced by the colors and cultures of six of those countries: Chile, Papua New Guinea, Jamaica, Greece, India, and the Seychelles.

Since Mondo Guerra was the winner of last week’s Broadway challenge, he gets the first pick and chooses Jamaica. Mondo then selects Michael Costello to make the next pick, and Michael goes straight for the Greek flag, which he had his hopes on from the moment he saw it (being Greek and all).

Mila chooses Papua New Guinea; Jerell Scott selects India; Austin goes with the Seychelles for a bit of a personal challenge; leaving Kenley Collins with Chile.

Armed with a $200 spending allowance for fabric, the designers first spend some time at the U.N. researching their prospective countries.

After choosing their fabric, the contestants get started, but Mondo immediately has his doubts about what he’s picked out. Austin’s also doing some second-guessing. Should he have taken such a risk by picking the Seychelles?

Michael, feeling quite confident, is already making a lot of progress; so much that the others think he’s already done before they’ve even fully figured out what they’re creating. Ahh, but will the judges like it?

Joanna Coles enters the workroom and starts off her consultations with Mondo. She likes his design, but is concerned that whoever wears it will have to go bra-less. “We want to be able to wear underwear in clothes,” she tells Michael, whose dress also takes out bras as an option.

The women, for the most part, have all designed bra-compatible looks, but is Kenley’s dress enough to impress the judges, or is it too close to what she’s been doing time and time again throughout the competition?

On the day of the Runway Show, the designers scramble to finish their dresses before the models head to hair and make-up.

With French designer Catherine Malandrino sitting in as guest judge, the show begins.

Of course, everyone loves their own looks, but will the judges?

Isaac Mizrahi quickly points out that Kenley’s dress looks a lot like the things she’s designed before and challenges her to do something different next time; although the judges all agree that it’s a fun look.

Michael’s dress is okay, but the judges feel that it’s better suited for a beauty pageant, and the bow would “look better on a Christmas present.” Ouch!

The judges also aren’t loving the colors in Austin’s Seychelles dress.

So who will win the challenge?

After deliberating, the judges decide that Michael is safe, but the winner of the challenge, once again, is Mondo. The judges also liked Kenley’s look, and she and Austin are safe as well. Unfortunately, Mila is not. Her dress was simply too “awkward” with its two separate lengths AND colors.

Who do you think should have won or lost on tonight’s episode of Project Runway All Stars?
