American Idol Recap: Top 12 Male Contestants Perform Live

February 28, 2012 08:02 PM by Candace Young

Tonight on FOX‘s American Idol the guys take the stage live and America will begin voting for their favorites. Host Ryan Seacrest introduces Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler. He points out that the top 12 girls are watching the action stage side. Keep reading for highlights from the top 12 male contestants’ live performances and to find out which guy will be reinstated by the judges…

Reed Grimm from Wisconsin is first to take the stage. He does a lounge-y version of Moves Like Jagger that picks up a little when he gets on the drums, but overall the arrangement sounds like it was done as cruise ship entertainment. The judges like it. Randy and Jennifer both give it a thumbs up. Steven says he loved the jazz too.

Adam Brock, who is a Cordon Bleu chef and who claims people tell him he sounds like he has a large black woman trapped inside him, is performing Aretha Franklin’s Think tonight on the Idol stage.  It’s a strong performance and he keeps it moving too. Steven tells ‘White Chocolate’ that it was brilliant. Jennifer compliments his big finish, and Randy chants, “Nice, nice.”

Ladykiller, Deandre Brackensick, is performing Earth, Wind and Fire’s Reasons tonight. The curly hair is flowing as are the lyrics – it’s soulful and vocally impressive. Jennifer yells his name at the end. Steven says he picked a song to show off his voice. Jennifer says his voice is so perfect to her. Randy says commercially, he’s ready to go now.

Colton Dixon, who has been two years getting to this moment, is doing a Paramour song on Idol tonight. He starts off on playing the piano, but ends up on top of it in a rather edgy performance. Randy calls him an indie alternative rocker – he’s glad Idol has him. Jennifer tells him he’s a relevant artist – she can hear him on the radio now. Steven tells him to keep on doing what he’s doing.

Contestant Jeremy Rosado takes the mood down a notch with a soulful tune on Idol tonight. The judges and audience are visibly moved.  Steven talks about his big heart and says his singing was beautiful. Jennifer says he’s blessed to have a voice that affects people. Randy says he was impressed with the tender moments and booming vocals – loves him!

Aaron Marcellus, who was championed by Jennifer Lopez to make it into the top 24, is singing Never Can Say Goodbye by The Jackson Five. It’s a very smooth performance, with Aaron engaging the audience and delivering in every way. The judges and crowd stand to applaud! Randy says he looked and sounded like an old school veteran. Jennifer says his voice takes her there – he can sing anything. Steven says he’s the whole package and just raised the bar.

Country crooner, Chase Likens, is singing Storm Warning by Hunter Hayes. Chase has lots of personality on stage, and sings pretty well. Steven welcomes the ‘cowboy’ to Idol. Jennifer says tonight is about showing America who he is – and he did that. Randy says he’s ready – welcome!

Creighton Fraker, who hails from a small town in South Dakota where he never felt he fit in, elects to sing True Colors by Cyndi Lauper for his live performance tonight. It’s an enjoyable arrangement and Creighton’s vocals show a lot of range. Jennifer tells him it was beautiful and a perfect song for him. Steven says it was stupendous – he did real good today. Randy tells him he can definitely sing.

Phillip Phillips does a super-sexy slowed-down version of In The Air Tonight live on American Idol. His powerful vocals, along with the twitchy delivery and the almost predatory looks he shoots the audience, makes for a short, but incredible performance! Jennifer says there is no doubt he’s one of the most special talents they found on the road. Steven says he has a crazy voice – he made that song beautiful. Randy says he’s one of his biggest fans – he’s so unique for this show – he loves it!

Eben Franckewitz , who is only 15 years-old, elects to take on an Adele song tonight – Rain. He sounds good vocally, but is maybe lacking a little in the appropriate emotions. Randy says it wasn’t all perfect, but he collected himself and nailed the end. Jennifer agrees with Randy. Steven says he has a good voice, though it was slightly pitchy in spots – he did good.

Heejun Han, who works with kids that have special needs, decides to put his sensitive side on display singing Angels. The feeling he puts into it is definitely on par with the strength of his sound. Jennifer says his voice is smooth as silk though the song may not have showed off all of it. Steven says he sure can sing, but also questions if it was the right song. Randy agrees with the other judges about the song – but is happy Idol found him.

Joshua Ledet, whom they call Mantasia (after Idol’s Fantasia), sings a Jennifer Hudson tune, You Pulled Me Through, and is absolutely in another league with his sensational vocals. Jennifer Lopez loves it so much she wants to punch him! The judges agree that Joshua will be doing whatever he likes up there on the Idol stage this season!

At last we learn it’s Jermaine Jones who is the eliminated contestant being brought back. He sings the ballad Dance With My Father in his deeply resonant voice – it sounds amazing. The judges stand up and clap! Randy hollers, “The Gentle Giant returns!” He loves his baritone and tells him congrats. Jennifer loves his spirit. Steven marvels, “What a beautiful thing, man.”

Well, it’s been a night of extremely strong performances from the guys tonight on American Idol – the top 12 girls have their work cut out for them tomorrow night on FOX!

Lindsey I like Eben as well. I hope he goes far in the competetion if not to the finale. He was a little flat at times when singing the Adele song but it was still a good performance because this is the most talented 15 year old to appear on any singing competetion in a long time!

I’m glad they brought back Jermaine. His rendetion of “Dance With My Father” made Luther Vandross smile in his grave. He’s not going anywhere anytime soon!
