Nicole Richie is about to make her fashion-minded reality television debut on Fashion Star next month, but how does she handle fame when she’s not working? Though the fashion mentor has always lived in the public eye, she ensures that her parenting approach is one that keeps her kids hidden from the influences Hollywood—including that of her own fame.
For example, Richie explained to Flare that her 4-year-old daughter, Harlow Winter Kate, has no idea of the power of her own name.
“She has no idea that she has two lines named after her,” said Richie. “I try and let her be a kid.”
She and husband Joel Madden know the harsh effects of Hollywood firsthand and make it a point to keep their Harlow and their son, Sparrow James Midnight, away from the spotlight. This includes potential role models as well.
“I was just talking to a friend of mine who has two little girls about a certain singer whose name I won’t mention,” she said. “He was really upset, saying she wasn’t a good role model for his kids. But here’s the thing: that girl is 20-something, so she shouldn’t be a role model to your little girls. She’s human, and it’s unrealistic to put people on a pedestal and expect that they’re not going to make mistakes.”
Richie also shares that parenthood has changed her daily routine. ”I wake up at 5:30 in the morning, every morning, so I can be alone,” she says. “I don’t have anywhere to be, but mentally, I like to go downstairs and drink my coffee … I’m telling you, it changes my entire day.”
Fashion Star, also featuring Jessica Simpson, John Varvotos and host Elle Macpherson premieres March 13 on NBC.
