Exclusive Interview: Million Dollar Listing’s Josh Altman Dishes On His First Season

March 01, 2012 06:22 PM by Lisa Princ

Last year, fans watched as Josh Altman, one of the most successful real estate agents in the country, joined Bravo‘s Million Dollar Listing to replace Chad Rogers. As we gear up for the new Million Dollar Listing New York, Josh took some time out of his super busy schedule to chat with us about his first season on the show. And if you thought for a minute that Josh Altman was just another snobby real estate agent, you could not be more wrong! Check out our exclusive interview with Josh after the jump.

Reality TV Magazine was lucky enough to get the opportunity to sit down and chat with Josh Altman of Million Dollar Listing today.  I’d like to start by telling you what a cool guy Josh was – in case you may have the wrong impression of him after watching last season. Josh was such a funny and down-to-earth guy, who had me laughing the entire interview – he really is the type of person that you could have a good time with. So, what did Josh Altman share with us? Check it out for yourself below!

RTVM: Can you tell us about your first season on Million Dollar Listing?

Josh Altman: I loved it. And I love how they portrayed me just how I am – all business. I care about my clients and my fun is the business. It was a crazy experience at first, you know, having all these cameras follow me around. It was weird, but then when we stopped taping, it was weird not having the cameras around – you get used to it quickly. It was fun, and I had a blast doing it.

Business has also been great since the show. We just sold our most expensive condo to date for $10.5 million dollars. We currently have $150 million dollars in listings, and have sold $40 million so far this year. We are hoping to hit our goal of $100 million dollars. RTVM: Inquiring minds want to know – was the drama between Madison Hildebrand and yourself real, or was it edited to make it appear that there was tension between you?

Josh Altman: To be 100% honest, it was all true, everything you saw. I am sure in the world of reality television, you see a lot of editing for drama, but that was not the case here. It all happened by chance that I met his assistant and it was all downhill from there. I have the utmost respect for all my fellow real estate agents, but I will say this in a nice way – we would never hang out. Madison and I do not get along at all – that is real.

RTVM: Speaking of Madison’s assistant, are you still dating Heather?

Josh Altman: We are still dating. That is really all I can say right now on that subject.

RTVM: You seem very close with your brother, can you tell us about your relationship?

Josh Altman: We are. We are three years apart, and he is my business partner. We are kind of like a good cop, bad cop team, and I am the bad cop [laughing]. We work well together in the business, although as with anyone you work with, we can have 10 arguments per day on some days. But being brothers, it doesn’t get to us – it’s great.

RTVM: You grew up on the East Coast, so what brought you to L.A.?

Josh Altman: The dream of real estate. I mean, I love New York as well, and I don’t think people realize how high the real estate value is in New York. Something attracted me to L.A. though, whether it was the beautiful weather, beautiful women, or just the lifestyle out here.

RTVM: How did you get into the real estate business?

Josh Altman: When I first moved out here with my brother, who was here for a year before I got here, we had a condo that we ended up buying together. We joked about putting it back on the market, and it did really well. We sold it for a huge profit back in 2002-2003. At that point, I started flipping homes – I think we flipped about eight or nine homes. We did that on the side of our other jobs – my brother was a talent agent, and I was in music management. I enjoyed it so much that I got my license and learned finance. I started as a mortgage broker and then took it further.

RTVM: What do you do for fun?

Josh Altman: I love my job, that is my fun. I am bored when I am not working. I don’t have much fun [laughing]. Even on vacation you can find me working. I was in Colorado recently, and even on the ski lift, as my hand was about to freeze, I was working. I had 10 deals in escrow and could not stop. By the end of the day, I usually come home and crash.

RTVM: I read that you do a lot of charity work, can you elaborate on that?

Josh Altman: Well, you know how much I love my dogs. In fact, that is my downtime – hanging out with my dogs outside. I don’t believe in purchasing animals, so I do a lot of charity work with rescued animals. I am also keen on feeding and helping the homeless. I also do speaking engagements, where I lecture young real estate agents.

RTVM: Is there anything that you would like to share with viewers?

Josh Altman: Can I start by saying that I am a really nice person. I am a strict business man, but I love to spend time with my family and my dogs. As for the real estate world, deals are not easy. Or at least not as easy as they look on the show! It’s funny because always tell me they are going to quit their jobs and get into real estate because it looks so easy, but don’t believe everything you see. Some deals actually take a very long time.

A huge thank you to Josh Altman for chatting with me today, it was such a pleasure! We sure hope that we will see you when the new season of Million Dollar Listing L.A. starts! In the meantime, be sure to tune in to Bravo on Wednesday, March 7, 2012 to check out Million Dollar Listing New York!
