This week on The Voice, with the Blind Auditions over and the teams set, it’s time for the next phase of NBC‘s hit singing competition — the Battle Round! Which artists will be eliminated, and who will move on to represent their celebrity coach in the Live Shows? Get all the highlights from tonight’s episode after the jump. Let the Battles begin!
The first pairing of Season 2′s Battle Round is from Team Adam — Tony Lucca vs. Chris Cauley singing U2‘s “Beautiful Day.” Helping prepare Tony for Battle, along with coach Adam Levine, is Alanis Morissette, while R&B crooner Robin Thicke works with Chris. Which artist will move on to the next round of the competition?
After a stellar duet, Blake Shelton thinks that Chris Cauley is the clear winner, and though Christina agrees that Chris was good, she’s pullin’ for her former Mouseketeer, Tony, as is Cee Lo Green. But of course, the choice is up to Adam, and he chooses Tony Lucca.
Next up, Team Blake, where coach Blake Shelton is pairing Adley Stump and RaeLynn to perform Tom Petty‘s “Free Fallin’.” For a little help along the way, Blake enlists his wife (and one of RaeLynn’s idols), Miranda Lambert. American Idol alum Kelly Clarkson is working with Stump. Who’s going to the Live Shows?
Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo agree that RaeLynn has (and may need) time to grow at the young age of 17, and Adley’s powerhouse voice seemed strong and won them over, but Adam is a fan of the unique quality of RaeLynn’s vocals. For Papa Shelton, the winner of the Battle is RaeLynn.
Team Christina’s first Battle of the evening is next: Chris Mann vs. Monique Benabou, singing Celine Dion‘s “Power of Love.” Monique is worried that her lack of training and inability to read music will cause her the competition, but after hearing her high note in rehearsals, Chris is starting to worry himself. Luckily, Christina’s brought in the legendary Lionel Richie to help boost Chris’ confidence, as singer/songwriter, Jewel gives Monique a few good pointers. Will Monique’s ability to tap into her emotions trump Chris’ musical training?
Cee Lo’s choice is Chris, Blake says it’s Monique who should win, and Adam just isn’t sure, but Christina ultimately decides to take Chris Mann to the Live Shows.
For Team Cee Lo, Cheesa and Angie Johnson are singing “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds is advising Cheesa, while Ne-Yo is working with Angie. The friendly competition doesn’t look so friendly in the beginning, as the ladies immediately try to outdo one another by requesting that they take the song up to a higher key, but will Cheesa regret starting the whole change-of-key game with notes that are too close to her breaking point?
Adam and Blake are split, with Adam siding with Cheesa. Christina agrees with Blake that Angie gave a slightly better vocal performance, but the winner according to Cee Lo Green is Cheesa.
Next up, it’s Jordis and Brian Fuente of Team Blake singing Alanis Morissette’s “Ironic.” Brian thinks that he’s the underdog as a male singing a song for a female lead, but with Kelly Clarkson in his corner, he just may win this one. Jordis, however, has Miranda helping her.
Christina and Adam think that Jordis is the clear winner, but for Cee Lo, it’s Brian. Which rocker does Blake want to take to the Live Shows? He doesn’t think it was a good performance, overall, but the winner of the Battle, for Shelton, is Jordis.
The last Battle of the night is from Team Christina. Anthony Evans and Jesse Campbell doing Alicia Keys‘ “If I Ain’t Got You.”
The performance is AH-mazing, but there can be only one winner, and it’s Jesse Campbell.
