Nick Cannon: “I Feel Better Than I’ve Ever Felt Before”

March 06, 2012 11:00 AM by Shayla Perry

Just two months after being rushed to the hospital for what was later described as mild kidney failure, America’s Got Talent host Nick Cannon revealed that he suffers from a rare autoimmune disease known as lupus nephritis. But despite his condition, the NBC reality star says that he’s “doing great,” as he opens up about his health issues in honor of World Kidney Day.

“I feel better than I’ve ever felt before and everybody’s like, ‘Are you OK?’ ‘Cause it’s like, I’m talking about my condition more, but I feel better than ever,” Nick Cannon tells Access Hollywood in a recent interview.

Things weren’t always so “great” though.

“There was those times, obviously sitting in the hospital, where you’re alone and thinking, ‘How did I get here?’ But even though doctors and different people may have been talking about life threatening situations, it never really registered to me that I was gonna fall, it was like, ‘Yo! You’re gonna get over this and you’re gonna be good,’” explained the reality TV host.

Despite his many hospitalizations, Cannon says that he never gave up hope; quitting simply wasn’t an option.

“I never succumbed to it,” says Nick. “I never thought of it like that, but definitely serious conditions with the kidney failure and even having blood clots in my lungs — that stuff people have passed away from, but I was gonna fight through it regardless.”

His condition – lupus nephritis – was diagnosed by doctors nearly two months ago when Nick was rushed to the hospital during a family vacation in Aspen.

“It’s like a really rare form of lupus that only attacks my kidney,” Cannon explains. “The whole thing — my condition now is kinda just getting it to go into remission, so my immune system doesn’t attack my kidneys anymore.”

To help get his health back on track, Nick has quit his radio show, but will continue hosting America’s Got Talent for NBC.
