Face Off Recap: Dinosaur Challenge Brings Another Double Elimination

March 07, 2012 09:44 PM by Ryan Haidet

Although some of the contestants were still dealing with the shock that Beki was eliminated from the previous challenge, they were even more shocked that the upcoming task would bring another double elimination.  This week, the five remaining Face Off contestants had to jump back to the dinosaur age for the big task.  Who were the two people sent packing from this challenge and who are the final three heading into next week’s finale?  Read on for all that and to see up-close images of the finished makeups!

The challenge began with the contestants going on a “field trip” to a museum to help them “think big” for the upcoming task.  When they arrived, the contestants learned they had to create a dinosaur/human hybrid.

As the challenge progressed, we saw several contestants who are usually very confident in themselves actually struggling with their work.  RJ chose to scrap the sculpting he did on the first day because he felt it looked too similar to previous work he had done.  Rayce, who has earned lots of praise from the judges in the past, found himself very disheartened with the way his latex tail came out because it didn’t cure properly.  “I feel like I failed and I could easily see myself going home,”he said.

Below are the finished products as revealed to the judges on the third day of the challenge, which was also RJ’s birthday.

Sue — Tianyulong: “It’s totally me, I love it,” Sue said of her makeup.  Glenn wasn’t too fond of the makeup because it was too much “girl power” for his style, but the two other judges liked it.

RJ — Velociraptor: He went for a comical, creative twist with his makeup by concocting a Velocirapper.  “I’m legitimately starting to get scared,” RJ said.  “I’m thinking I’m going home on birthday because I know that Glenn doesn’t like humor — he’s said it before.”  Judge Ve Neill really liked it a lot by saying, “You probably could have done a little bit more with the paint job.  A little bit more break up would have pulled this look together really well.  That being said, it does not detract from the fact that I think he’s a really successful character.”

Matt — Carnotaurus: “I think he looks intimidating,” Matt said of his creation.  “He’s phenomenal.”  While Ve loved the chest piece and the skeletal look, Glenn thought he missed the dinosaur concept a bit.  Judge Glenn Hetrick said, “Some really cool stuff going on, I think you might have overextended yourself though.”

Ian — Triceratops: “He’s looking really cool,” Ian said.  The judges pretty much agreed that Ian did an amazing job capturing the dinosaur appearance, but lacked in offering human elements.

Rayce — Corythosaurus: “I think everyone else’s is good and then mine is just a step under all of them,” Rayce said.  “I have never been this nervous in any of the other challenges and my heart is just pounding.”  But despite all of his concern, the judges were thrilled with his work.  “What it is that you’ve achieved here this week is truly impressive,” Glenn said.  “Wicked accurate decisions.  I love that you integrated the shape of the dinosaur into a profile, not just aspects of it jammed into the color,” Glenn said.  As far as the tail is concerned, Ve thought it looked fabulous.  “I have to eat my own words about not liking blue makeups because this one’s really cool.”

For once I agreed with the judges when they chose Rayce’s makeup as the best of the challenge.  “You very successfully merged the human and dinosaur forms in your creation,” Glenn said.  “It was a beautifully executed makeup.”  With that, Rayce became the first person moving on to the finale.  The judges then announced that Ian and RJ were also moving into the final round.  That left both Sue and Matt on the losing end and were eliminated from the competition.

Next week marks the season finale.  Who will win?  Will it be Rayce, Ian or RJ?  Do you think they are the most worthy for the final three?  If not, who would you put in the finale instead?  As far as my pick for the winner, my money is on Rayce because of the edit he’s getting and the love the judges toss his direction.

Within the dino challenge the photo of the guy dressed as a Triceratops reminds me of Tricero from the Dinosaucers.
