She’s been Khloe Kardashian Odom‘s bubbly BFF for years, but in this season of E!‘s Khloe & Lamar, viewers get to see a more vulnerable side of Ms. Malika Haqq, as her personal life plays out both on and off camera. In an exclusive interview with Reality TV Magazine, Malika opens up about her unbreakable bond with Khloe, what really went on in her “crazier than a soap opera” relationship with married NFL star Adrian Wilson, and lets us in on the one thing everyone should know about the Kardashian clan, whether you’re keeping up with them or not.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a true friend whom you can count on for just about anything. For Malika Haqq, that friend (one of them, anyway) is Khloe Kardashian Odom.
“One of the reasons why we are so close is [because] we’re very honest with each other. And I think that when you know someone loves you as much as Khloe loves me, the things that she says are never to hurt you, they’re never for anything but your benefit,” Haqq explains of their friendship.
“She doesn’t want anything but the absolute best for me. … She really genuinely cares about the things that are important to me, so when it comes down to my personal, everyday things or my relationships, she’s definitely influential.”
And that includes Malika’s relationship with Adrian Wilson of the Arizona Cardinals; a relationship that Khloe had her doubts about from the start, and the married NFL player is now denying ever existed, despite the fact that he appeared on the show with Haqq.
Although he and his wife have been very vocal on Twitter, claiming that it was nothing but tricky, reality show editing, three months after their break-up, Malika is ready to move on from the soap opera-like drama…even though watching it all unfold on TV doesn’t make that very easy.
“It’s like reliving a situation that you kind of would like to bury,” says Haqq. “And I don’t mean that in a negative way, but sometimes you’d like to let the past be the past.”
As for her response to all the hate Adrian and his wife have been spewing online, Malika says she doesn’t deserve it, but neither do they.
“The truth is that we did have a relationship, and that was still portrayed in the episode and I think that a portion of the denial and some of the mean things that they have said about me is because they are now back together and I think they feel like I’m trying to put some sort of damper on what they have when I was really only relating to what once was.
“I don’t have any ill will for them. My intentions are not to speak for him in any capacity, but just to share my story. So, in all honesty, I don’t have any dislike for Adrian, no one on my side does. We understand what his position is and why things may have panned out the way they have. I’m kind of movin’ on.”
Moving on, and more confident than ever in her dating boundaries. But could the love she’s been waiting for be right in front of her? Will she and Rob Kardashian ever end up together?!
“I don’t really know. I think the fans would tell you totally different. It is very sweet and it is very flattering for people to see you with someone and say, ‘Oh my God — that’s your happy!’” says Malika.
“I think that Robert and I’s – I guess you can say past situations have never been that of a truly serious nature,” she explains. “I can’t even say we were ever dating. Who knows? Robert and I say one thing, everybody else says something else. But I love him to death, he’s a dear friend of mine and he will always be. So I can’t say yes, can’t say no. Never say never.”
Of course, her love for the Kardashian family doesn’t end with Rob and Khloe. When it comes to the Kardashians, Haqq says that there’s a lot more to reality TV’s royal family than what we see.
“That’s the unfortunate part about show business in itself. You get these characters and more so with reality television I think people think that they know exactly who individuals are. But unless you spend some intimate time with someone, you have no idea what their heart is.
“As much as people may pay attention to the dollar amounts and the things that they may have or how public of figures they’ve become, they are truly loving individuals,” says Malika. “Most huge families are dysfunctional, [with] people they haven’t spoken to in years and people they hadn’t seen in forever and all of those things, but they are truly as close as they are because of the love that they have for individuals. And anyone that really does truly know them would say that.”
Anyone who truly knows Malika would say that she exudes that love for others just as well.
“Sometimes people say, ‘You can’t be so nice to people,’ but I feel like it’s a choice. I choose to be kind,” Haqq explains. “Of course, you can cross anyone and you’ll see another side of them, but I take joy in treating others the way I want to be treated. Whether I get it or not…often it’s not. But it just happens to be who I am, and sometimes life makes people hard, and that is just what I’m trying not to be, no matter what. I believe that I have the heart that I have because that’s the way God wants me to be.”
So what’s next for Malika?
Hopefully, more scripted projects. With acting still “100%” of her focus, the ATL star says we can expect to be seeing her in more roles “sooner rather than later,” promising, “I’ll be back soon.”
In the meantime, you can catch Malika in all new episodes of Khloe & Lamar Sundays at 10|9c on E!.
