Rod Blagojevich was convicted of 17 felonies back in June, which included trying to sell Barack Obama’s vacant Senate seat after he was elected president in 2008. For his crimes he received a prison sentence of 14 years back in December. Today, Rod Blagojevich will begin to serve his 14-year term, and he said his goodbyes to friends and fans that crowded his home yesterday. “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but this is the law and we follow the law,” Blagojevich told supporters yesterday.
Rod Blagojevich’s wife Patti, who remained by his side the entire time, tried to fight back tears as he continued to speak to the crowd. As supporters rallied outside the couple’s home, chants of “Free our Governor” could be heard, and Blagojevich thanked them: “We are so grateful and will never ever forget your kindness to us,” adding: “This, as bad as it is, is part of a long and hard journey that will only get worse before it gets better.”
Rod Blagojevich will serve his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood, southwest of Denver, Colorado. Ironically, Rod Blagojevich spent months professing his innocence on Celebrity Apprentice, social media sites, and in news conferences, but he never took the stand in his own defense at his trial.
