Tonight on ABC, it’s time to get up and dance for a new season of Dancing With The Stars! Tom Bergeron and Brooke Burke Charvet kick off the exciting night by introducing the new stars and their professional dance partners! Keep reading for all the highlights from the very first live performances of the season…
Tom and Brooke remind us that no one will go home this week on Dancing With the Stars.
Maria Menounos and Derek Hough are up first tonight on ABC. Maria, a self-professed tomboy, had a little trouble adapting to high heels in practice. She also showed off her laugh – which is reminiscent of a donkey. Maria and Derek kick off the show with a Cha Cha Cha – it’s pretty darn good! Maria seems to be fine in her heels, and is only slightly stiff at times. Len says they coped very well with the first dance. Bruno thinks Maria is curvaceously delicious, but agrees with Len that she needs more hip action. Carrie Ann says they did a great job; Maria just needs to move more confidently from one move to the next. They earn a ’7′ from each of the judges for a total of 21.
Soap opera heartthrob, Jack Wagner, and Anna Trebunskaya are up next on Dancing With The Stars. Jack and Anna tackle the Foxtrot in jaunty turquoise outfits from the 40′s or 50′s. They do great! People in the crowd come to their feet. Bruno says it was beautifully acted and danced – he loved it! Carrie Ann claps and says they took her to a happy place – Jack can act, sing, and dance! Len says the feel of the whole thing was uplifting, but criticizes Jack’s technique, raising ‘boos’ from the crowd. They get ’8′ from Carrie Ann and Bruno, and ’7′ from Len for a total of 23 points.
Green Bay Packers’ Donald Driver, and Peta Murgatroyd are third to dance tonight. They’re doing the Cha Cha Cha. The team is wearing gold outfits and the routine has a disco vibe to it – it’s fun, and Donald, though hesitant at the very start, really gets into the dance! Carrie Ann can’t believe it’s week one! She’s not sure how much Cha Cha Cha was going on, but she can’t wait to see them next week. Len compliments their flair and gets a few laughs talking about Donald getting carried away with his gyrations. Bruno says they got the full impact of Donald’s power – he just has to refine it. They earn ’7′s from each of the judges, for a total of 21.
Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff, the defending champion, are next to perform on Dancing With the Stars. They are dancing the Foxtrot in a fairytale forest setting. Gavin seems pretty comfortable, though the pace is slower than some of the others. His facial expressions are fitting and the routine is pretty to watch. Len tells Gavin he was a little stiff – he thinks the jive will suit him more. Bruno appreciated the gentle quality of his dance, but wants him to learn to link the moves. Gavin jokes that he sometimes stiffens at the wrong times. Carrie Ann, still blushing, from Gavin’s joke, says there is a tenderness to his dancing that is great to watch, and she liked the flow, but though he overextended at times. They get ’7′s from Carrie Ann and Bruno, and a ’6′ from Len, for at total of 20.
Disney star Roshon Fegan and Chelsea Hightower will bring Roshon’s youth and knowledge of hip-hop to Dancing With the Stars. This Foxtrot begins with a Roshon moonwalking a la Michael Jackson! It’s a really good routine mixing the traditional steps with some hip-hop groove! Bruno enthuses that Roshon was razor sharp – unbelievable! Carrie Ann says he did the coolest spin she’s seen in 14 seasons! Len says there is no question he can dance, but he again criticizes the technique – and again earns ‘boos’ from the audience. They earn ’8′s from Carrie Ann and Bruno, and a ’7′ from Len, for a total of 23.
The View’s Sherri Shepherd and Val Chmerkovskiy are tackling the Foxtrot tonight on ABC. Sherri is resplendent in a a purple gown and Val is hot in black and purple. Sherri is a bit unsure with some of the steps, but delivers with smiles and attitude! Carrie Ann loves her joy, and comments on her hesitations. Len says it was fun, fun, fun! Bruno also comments on her happiness, and says her timing was good – she lights up the room! They get ’8′s from Carrie Ann and Bruno, and ’7′ from Len, for a total of 23.
Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are up next. Their practice session was hilarious! They’re performing the Cha Cha Cha, and both look super hot in tight black outfits – and yes, Maksim has his shirt open – mmm! It’s an excellent routine that wins Len’s respect! Bruno also loved it – a very inspiring first performance. Carrie Ann also thought it was an inspiring first routine, but noticed Melissa had some nerves going on. They earn ’7′s from Carrie Ann and Bruno, and a ’6′ from Len, for a total of 20.
Cuban-born telenovela hottie, William Levy, and Cheryl Burke started practicing late, so William’s hoping his Cuban blood will carry him through. They are dancing the Cha Cha Cha. It turns out pretty well! William can definitely move those hips despite being so muscle-bound! The women are screaming. Bruno raves! Carrie Ann thanks ABC for her job, and then compliments the dancing. Len also thought they maintained control and did a good job! They get ’8′s from all three judges, for a total of 24.
Former tennis sensation, Martina Navratilova, and Tony Dovolani will dance next. Martina is worried about her lack of femininity as they tackle the Foxtrot. She looks beautiful in her sparkling black gown, and seems to enjoy herself! Her dancing needs some work as she’s hesitant, but it was still nice to watch. Carrie Ann says it was beautiful, but she needs to work on her turns. Len says it was too careful. Bruno tells her she looks stunning! He says she needs more fluidity and to work on her footwork, but she did very well! They earn ’7′s from Bruno and Carrie Ann, and a ’6′ from Len, for a total of 20.
Classical UK singer, Katherine Jenkins, and Mark Ballas are next to take the stage with their Foxtrot. Katherine hopes Americans will embrace and support her. She is gorgeous in a buttercup yellow gown which contrasts beautifully with Mark’s dark suit. They are elegant and breathtaking to watch! Len thought she had great musicality and lyrical moves – it was cracking! Bruno deems it exquisite – surreal – where do they go from here?! Carrie Ann says it was like watching two pros! They score ’9′s from Carrie Ann and Bruno, and ’8′ from Len – is this really week one? It’s a total of 26 for Katherine and Mark!
Music legend, Gladys Knight, and Tristan MacManus are ready to show their stuff as they perform the Cha Cha Cha. Rocking a red flapper-style dress, Gladys gives it her all on the dance floor much to the crowd’s delight – she gets a standing ovation! Bruno salutes her for being a true star! Carrie Ann is so honored that she’s on their dance floor and shaking her tailfeather like nobody’s business! Len says she did a wonderful job! She gets ’8′s from Bruno and Carrie Ann, and a ’7′ from Len, for a total of 23.
Jaleel White, best known as Steve Urkel from Family Matters, and Kym Johnson are last up on Dancing With the Stars tonight. Kym describes Jaleel as a ‘natural’. They perform the Foxtrot dressed in grey and white, and there is nothing awkward or geeky about it – Jaleel is fantastic! Carrie Ann says it was so smooth! Len says it was elegant and sophisticated, adding that this was the best first show of any season! Bruno thought he was watching Gregory Hines! They earn ’9′s from Bruno and Carrie Ann, and ’8′ from Len, for a total of 26!
