Former ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Champ Hines Ward Retires From NFL

March 21, 2012 09:47 AM by Shayla Perry

Hines Ward is hanging up his cleats. After spending more than a decade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 36-year-old wide receiver and former champion of ABC‘s Dancing With The Stars is leaving the NFL. But why is Ward retiring now? Read on for all the details.

On March 1, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced their plans to release Hines Ward from his contract prior to the 2012 NFL season, noting that he has been “an integral part of our success since we drafted him in 1998 and we will forever be grateful for what he has helped us achieve.”

“He has meant so much to this organization, both on and off the field, and we appreciate his efforts over the past 14 years,” Steelers president Art Rooney added. “Hines’ accomplishments are numerous, and he will always be thought of as one of the all-time great Steelers. We wish him nothing but the best.”

Instead of suiting up in something other than the black and yellow he’s worn for 14 years, Ward decided to retire.

“I just wouldn’t feel right,” a tearful Hines said during a press conference announcing his retirement from the league.

“I can say I’m a Steeler for life and that’s the bottom line, that’s all I’ve really ever wanted,” Ward added, before thanking Rooney for “giving a small-town boy from Forest Park, GA a chance.”
