Project Runway All-Stars Recap: And The Winner Is…

March 22, 2012 07:34 PM by Shayla Perry

Last week on Lifetime the three remaining designers were given their final challenge — to create a mini-collection to be debuted in a red-carpet runway show in just five days. Tonight, find out which designer will receive redemption and become the first winner of Project Runway All-Stars.

It’s the morning of the runway show and Austin Scarlett, Michael Costello, and Mondo Guerra arrive at Gotham Hall to scope out the space.

Two hours ahead of the show, Austin is backstage, frantically making last minute changes.

Michael is upset because after getting everything prepared the night before, one of his dresses isn’t fitting the model properly.

After hair and make-up, Joanna Coles walks in for one last consultation and then…it’s showtime.

With the judges — along with guest judges Tommy Hilfiger and Ken Downing — seated in the front row, Austin Scarlett kicks things off with his collection, followed by Mondo’s “Therapy,” and last, but certainly not least, Michael.

The judges are thoroughly impressed with Austin’s wedding dress, but are concerned that his collection, doesn’t exactly look like a collection, but more of a “best of” type showing of six very different looks.

Mondo’s collection is the “most cohesive” of the three, and the judges love his “attention to detail.” But will he finally get the win he’s been waiting for?

It’ll be tough beating Michael’s collection. The judges feel that the clothes are almost ready to put in stores immediately, but warn Michael that his designs run the risk of coming across as “cheap” if not executed properly.

All in all, the judges are blown away by the designers and what they’ve managed to create in such a short amount of time, however, only one can win.

The runners up won’t be going home empty handed though. They’ll each receive two tickets for a luxury getaway to Paris!

Who will take home the biggest prize in Project Runway history?

Michael is out, leaving the competition down to Mondo and Austin.

And the winner is…Mondo Guerra!

Mondo has always won my heart from early on. He has this look about him when at a surface level people go….oh wow. On a heart, soul level…..blows me away. So before he bared his soul with HIV status, I contacted him via Facebook and told him in a not so weird I am a freak fan way that I knew there was something so unique and special about this guy not knowing what awaited us in his very courageous way of coming out HIV + and doing it with grace.

He responded to my message. What an amazing human Mondo you truly are. Thank you for having the courage and the intuitive sense through your talent as an artist and as a human to carry a message to other people and to make this world a better place simply by your light.

    Big mistake.

Just wait until Mondo gets into the Marie Claire editorial meetings and starts having one of his suicidal mood fits. And his collection was not that great — repetitive and not inspired.

Austin would have loved the magazine world and absorbed information and experience like a sponge. His collection showed more breadth of view and it was made for feminine women, not hard-edged stick models. Austin could be the kind of designer whose work echoes through history — after this loss, will he get the chance?

Further, Austin has worked in the industry – Mondo works for himself — Austin can sketch and convey his ideas — Mondo broods and makes lists, so how is he going to communicate with others?

Big mistake, Project Runway All Stars — but at least it wasn’t an obvious SET UP like the last Project Runwas was for ANYA.

Thank you for an interesting season.
