Dancing With The Stars Recap: Quicksteps and Jives

March 26, 2012 07:04 PM by Candace Young

Tonight on ABC, the Season 14 couples will dance the jive and quickstep on Dancing With The Stars in a bid to avoid elimination on what is being called the most competitive season ever by host Tom Bergeron! Keep reading for all of the highlights and judges’ comments from tonight’s performances…

Who will impress judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, and Bruno Tonioli this week on Dancing With The Stars? It’s anyone’s guess, as the couples set the bar very high last week when they danced live for the first time on ABC.

Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower kick off the night dancing the quickstep. They are dressed formally and Roshon sports a confident facial expression as they make their way around the dance floor. The high-energy start earns a big grin from Len, who says he loved it! Bruno enthuses that Roshon has more spark than a bolt of lightening! Carrie Ann says he turned last week’s swagger into sophistication! Carrie Ann and Bruno give them ’9′ and Len gives them ’8′, for a total of ‘26‘!

Sherri Shepherd and Val Chmerkovskiy tackle the jive this week. Sherri’s stamina was an issue during practice. Well, it’s not a problem in the live performance – Sherri absolutely explodes to Proud Mary! Bruno hollers, “Shake, rattle, and roll!” He loved it! Carrie Ann says it was a phenomenal routine – she loved the confidence and energy. They also get raves from Len who says he loved watching her, even though there could have been a bit more jive content. Carrie Ann and Bruno give them ’8′ and Len scores a ’7′, for a total of ‘23‘.

Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy will be dancing a quickstep to a song by Billy Idol, whom she dated in the 80′s! Melissa and Maks do an upbeat routine and even use the stairs. She slips up and recovers, but also looks a tad nervous at times. Carrie Ann reminds her to hide her nerves. Len says he found it hectic and a little loose. Bruno thought Melissa coped very well with a difficult dance. Carrie Ann and Bruno give ’7′s and Len gives a ’6′, for a total of ‘20‘.

Jack Wagner and Anna Trebunskaya struggle to get his bum moving in practice for their jive. Jack rocks his jive performance on the dance floor, keeping up with Anna and keeping an excited facial expression. Len tells him he attacked the dance, but it was very well done. Bruno notes that they weren’t quite on the beat of the song. Carrie Ann agrees that they over-danced it, but says Jack is really fun to watch. They get ’7′s from all three judges for a total of ‘21‘.

Gladys Knight and Tristan MacManus are doing a quickstep this week. Gladys tells Tristan in practice she wants to be really good – not just pass. Performing live, their dance is enjoyable to watch, but seems slowed down in a sense. Bruno says she is a natural, but she has to be conscious of her frame. Carrie Ann says she is light on her feet, but agrees the frame was too casual for quickstep. Len points out how technical the quickstep is, and says though he admires her, he didn’t really appreciate the dance tonight. He scores them a ’5′ while Carrie Ann and Bruno score ’7′s, for a total of ‘19‘.

Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas are doing a ‘sassy’ jive tonight. Mark instructs her to wiggle her naughty bits! They deliver a very hot routine with a casino theme! Carrie Ann says it was brilliant and crows about the extension of Katherine’s legs. Len loved the beginning and end sections though the middle wasn’t his cup of tea. Bruno roars that the bombshell has been released for their viewing pleasure! Carrie Ann and Bruno score ’9′s and Len gives an ’8′ for a total of ‘26‘!

Jaleel White and Kym Johnson are up next with their jive on Dancing With The Stars.  They have a soda fountain theme and dance to Marry You by Bruno Mars. It’s fun, but a tad anti-climactic. Len says it wasn’t crisp and sharp – not terrible, but needed more attack. Bruno says it was quirky and he enjoyed it, but agrees it should be sharper. Carrie Ann says it was solid, but he seemed flat-footed; it lacked sparkle. Carrie Ann and Len give ’7′s and Bruno gives an ’8′, for a total of  ‘22‘.

Maria Menounos and Derek Hough are doing a quickstep with a Bonnie and Clyde theme. Maria is nursing a sore rib from a move they did in practice. They do an energetic, bouncing quickstep that seems excellent. Bruno compliments the frame and feels it was brilliant! Carrie Ann points out that Maria fell out of step at one point but says it’s a huge improvement. Len would have liked more body contact but feels it was well done. Carrie Ann and Len give them ’8′s and Bruno scores a ’9′ for a total of ‘25‘!

Martina Navratilova and Tony Dovolani are performing a jive this week. Martina aggravates an old injury during practice. On the dance floor, Martina gets out of step with Tony almost immediately, but recovers and delivers a fairly solid routine, though it’s clear throughout that she is thinking hard about the steps and moves. Carrie Ann mentions her getting out of step. Len says it was too careful again. Bruno says it was nice to see Martina having fun. Carrie Ann and Bruno score ’6′s and Len gives a ’5′, for a total of ‘17‘.

Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd are doing the quickstep. Peta says she has given Donald a tough routine.  Donald seems to do her proud as their dance is beautiful to watch and seems flawless. Len says it’s up with the best he’s seen tonight and apologizes to Donald for under marking him last week! Bruno says they had great lines and it was refined and elegant! Carrie Ann compliments Donald on his hold and how he took Peta around the dance floor. All three judges give ’8′s for a total of ‘24‘.

Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff were tied for last place after last Monday night’s performance and tackle the jive this week. Rocking a 1950s theme, Gavin and Karina deliver a solid and fun routine! Bruno loves Gavin’s leather and ‘Elvis pelvis’, but says he messed up some kicks and flicks. Carrie Ann says he went way past what he thought he could do. Len liked the energy and calls it a big improvement! All three judges score ’7′s for a total of ‘21‘.

William Levy and Cheryl Burke are last up tonight on Dancing With The Stars. The crowd erupts even before the hot Cuban-born soap star is announced to do his quickstep. William and Cheryl hit the floor in tux and gown and really turn it on. Carrie Ann says quickstep is about the technique and William’s like the Harry Connick Jr. of the dance floor! Len says it was good, not great. Bruno says he has the ability to dazzle even fully-clothed – he played it like a matinee idol! Carrie Ann and Bruno award ’9′s and Len gives a ’7′, for a total of ‘25‘.
