American Idol Recap: Songs Of The 80′s

April 04, 2012 07:02 PM by Candace Young

Last week on FOX‘s American Idol, the contestants delivered some mind-blowing performances as they chose songs by artists they consider to be their idols. Heejun Han was sent home in the results show. Tonight, the Top 8 will do songs from the 80′s in hopes of earning raves from Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson, and America! Gwen Stefani is the celebrity mentor this week. Keep reading for highlights and judges remarks…

Tonight, Ryan Seacrest kicks off American Idol by showing a photo of Randy’s look in the 80′s before bringing out the Top 8 contestants.

DeAndre Brackensick is first to perform tonight. He starts off out in the audience and delivers a smooth version of DeBarge’s I Like It. Jennifer hollers that she likes it a lot! Steven and Randy both agree that he brought it. DeAndre tells Ryan he feels good about his performance.

Elise Testone is singing I Want To Know What Love Is by Foreigner tonight. Gwen Stefani gets ‘goosies’ listening to her rehearse. Elise delivers a powerful performance in her signature husky tone. Steven isn’t sure it was the right song for her. Jennifer tells her she has a powerhouse voice – she felt her emotion. Randy says she was a little bit pitchy all the way through.

Colton Dixon and Skylar Laine team up to perform a duet of Islands in the Stream by Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. The judges love it!

Phillip Phillips is up next. He’s doing That’s All by Genesis. He has a rough time in practice but works through it.  On stage, Phillip attacks the tune with his usual intensity, softening at the right times, and it’s amazing! Steven loves his individuality – it makes him great every time! Jennifer says it was pretty great! Randy loved it and thought it was a great song choice for him!

DeAndre Brackensick and Hollie Cavanaugh team up to perform The Pointer Sisters tune I’m So Excited.  The judges like it – very impressive!

Joshua Ledet is performing If You Don’t Know Me By Now by Simply Red. It’s a terrific song choice for his gospel-style vocals that makes for a stirring performance. Jennifer enthuses about the powerhouse performance! Steven says it was over-the-top; sensational! Randy tells him he wanted to stand up from beginning to end, that’s how good it was!

Jessica Sanchez is tackling Whitney Houston this week. She’ll sing How Will I Know? Jessica starts off in the audience and makes her way up on stage sounding absolutely strong-voiced and yet perky all the way. Jennifer says she’s a natural performer – it’s crazy! Steven says her voice is so fantastic everything she does is great! Randy says she did an amazing job of that song – big shoes to fill!

Phillip Phillips and Elise Testone perform the Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks duet Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around. They deliver a raunchy-good version of the tune!  Randy yells, “That was hot! That was great!” Jennifer and Steven concur.

Hollie Cavanaugh is doing What A Feeling! from the movie Flashdance tonight on American Idol. Hollie really belts out the tune, but doesn’t let loose as much as she could with this song. Steven says she arrived at the end, but her pitch was all over the place, he’s sorry to say. Jennifer sees her trying to do what everyone advised her to do, but she didn’t release and let go – it didn’t feel like the pop song it is. Randy says she has the talent, but agrees if she stops thinking it will come together.

Aretha Frankin and George Michael’s duet I Knew You Were Waiting For Me is performed by Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet. It’s crazy good! Randy says they are two of the greatest singers to hit this competition! Jennifer says it’s a dream pairing, and wonders, “Final?” Steven says the performance defies judging.

Colton Dixon will perform Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper tonight. Gwen Stefani thought it was a strange choice at first, but says it turned out great. She even sang harmony with him in practice. Colton does an amazing job of making the song his own! Steven says he could do a record right now! Jennifer thought it was really good – she liked it! Randy remarks that he made it his own – he’s so current!

Skylar Laine is singing Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler for her 80′s performance. She was stunned to see Gwen Stefani in rehearsal! Skylar looks fantastic in a hot pink gown and does a fabulous job with the tune – she belts it out! Randy says, “Wow, wow!” He thinks it was her best performance on the show to date! Jennifer says she just told America not to count her out! Amazing! Steven says it was the best song she could have picked – she’s at the beginning of a great career!

Kellie Pickler and The Wanted perform on tomorrow night’s American Idol results show on FOX!

Really, who picks the next American Idol? The judges or America…Jessica Sanchez is a good singer, not the best in the country, however, Randy must think so. How unfair to the other contestants still competing for American Idol.
