Melissa Rycroft, from ABC‘s The Bachelor, has always been known for her bubbly personality and big smile. Melissa Rycroft even bounced back from being dumped up on national TV, so having a baby should have been a piece of cake! But when the baby came, Melissa wasn’t the happy mommy she wanted to be! Keep reading to find out more about Melissa Rycroft’s battle with postpartum depression.
Everyone tells you how wonderful motherhood is and how happy you should be, but that’s not always the reality. Let’s be honest, a man probably said all those things! The lack of sleep, hormones and physical changes in your body can be very overwhelming. Melissa Rycroft knows all too well the feelings of guilt and sadness that come with postpartum.
Melissa gave birth to her daughter, Ava, in 2011 and right away she felt off. “Almost immediately I didn’t feel right. I have just given birth to this perfect baby, but absolutely nothing made me happy anymore. I had these great blessings, but I felt empty,” Melissa shared with Us Weekly. Even when Melissa tried to feel “normal” again by going on a date with her husband, when her baby was two weeks old, she received nasty comments via Twitter. People tore into Melissa for leaving such a young baby at home and going out. Can you imagine what those people say when they watch those mothers on 16 and pregnant? Days of being spit-up on, not sleeping and constantly changing diapers – a mom needs a break! Melissa sunk into a dark place, because she couldn’t find a happy balance.
Melissa finally met with a doctor who confirmed she had postpartum and anxiety. Now Melissa and her husband, Tye, see a therapist on a weekly basis. The journey Melissa went through was captured on her reality show, Melissa & Tye, which will air on the CMT network April 20th.
