The Voice Recap: Teams Blake & Christina Face Instant Eliminations

April 16, 2012 07:33 PM by Shayla Perry

Surprised by tonight’s Instant Elimination twist on The Voice? So were the coaches! Apparently, somebody didn’t get the memo from NBC. Find out which two artists were cut from Teams Blake and Christina, plus more highlights from the show after the jump.

The first performance of the night is from Team Blake’s sassy Texas native,  RaeLynn, who bumps and grinds her way through “She’s Country,” getting a standing ovation from Blake Shelton, and inspiring Christina Aguilera to get a little bit country herself.

Who can top that?

Perhaps one Mr. Jesse Campbell who takes on Beyonce‘s “Halo.” With his daughter as his inspiration, Jesse, not surprisingly delivers another great performance. And yes, all of the coaches still think he’s the favorite to win.

Up next, Jordis Unga. After almost being eliminated last week, she’s back, and appropriately singing “A Little Bit Stronger.” It’s an emotional one for Jordis, and the coaches agree that the whole vulnerability thing is definitely working for her.

With a little help from Crenshaw High School’s gospel choir, Team Christina takes the stage next, first showering Blake Shelton with some bills as he gets grinded on by the male strippers he’s been complaining about all season.

After belting it out with her coach and teammates, Ashley De La Rosa is hitting the stage again singing “Foolish Games.” Is the teen really Christina’s “secret weapon”? Cee Lo’s critique is a bit underwhelming, but Adam and Blake seem to think that the smartest decision this season was Ashley being saved.

The second smartest?

The collaboration between Maroon 5 and Wiz Khalifa, who perform their new single, “Payphone.” Good luck trying to get this one out of your head!

Next, Team Blake’s Erin Willett is attempting Adele‘s “Set Fire to The Rain.” Not many have been able to handle Adele this season. Will Erin be the one to finally get it right? She came pretty close, but WILLETT be enough to keep her in the competition? (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Lindsey Pavao is challenging herself with Katy Perry‘s “Part of Me.” There are a few pitch problems, but as Blake points out, when you’re a fan of Lindsey, those things are excused. But what’s up with Cee Lo and Christina not knowing the song?!

It’s Papa Bear’s turn to sing with his team, and tonight, Team Blake is singing “Heartache Tonight.” We think we’ve found our next platinum-selling country group! Okay, maybe a little wishful thinking on our part, but their voices sound AWESOME together.

Returning to the stage, Jermaine Paul performs “Against All Odds.” Christina loves it so much that Jermaine is officially her favorite member of Team Blake.

Last, but certainly not least, is Team Christina’s Chris Mann singing “Viva La Vida.” It’s a surprising song choice, but it works even if Adam would’ve preferred to hear Chris sing opera.

And now for the hard part….

For the first time, the coaches have to cut one of their team members immediately.

It’s a difficult decision, but it has to be done, and Christina ultimately chooses to eliminate Jesse Campbell!

For Team Blake, the artist going home is Jordis Unga.

Jesse Campbell and Jermaine are the best of the show, and she got rid of Jesse???

The elimination of Jessie Campbell was a disgrace. He was incredibly talented. Chistine gone it so wrong. I won’t be watching The Voice any longer. Clearly, the coaches are not looking for the best and brightest. Perhaps they see too much competition for themselves.

I have no reason to watch this show because they aren’t looking for “the voice!” Jessie’s gone!

Christina must be on some type of weight loss drug that effects your brain! Eliminate Jesse, come on. He was the best there. Just shows Jesse should have picked Adam as his coach.

Way to go NBC….your new ‘twist’ just took one of the fan favorites off the show. Jesse was robbed and so were we by not letting the audience vote for him. What in the hell was Christina thinking. She put an average, at best ‘lounge’ singer and a girl has yet to sing on key ahead of Jesse. What a shame. One of the most disgusting turn of events I’ve ever witnessed in this type of programing…just when I thought no talent show could suck as much as American Idol…you proved me wrong. Jesse you deserved better!

I could not believe my ears when Christina eliminated Jessie. What was she thinking??? However, I believe God has something much better for Jessie than Christina or The Voice. This show was somewhat of a stepping stone for him. Same think with Jennifer Hudson. Idol idiots let her go, and look at her now. Jessie’s elimination gives me one less show to watch on Monday . I know NBC could not really care about one viewer, but that’s ok too. The Voice has fallen into my category with Idol and X-Factor – trash!

I think Christina is a self centered moron. She will never win this

I think Cristina’s narcissism got the better of her. I think she made it personal. I think she needed the contestants to show case “her creativity” and “ability to extend an artist as a coach”.
Are we moving to form over content?
Jessie eliminated because “some people could take advice on board more then others” – a psychologist’s field day this one is…enough for a whole conference here! Kat
