American Idol Recap: Recent Hits, Soul Selections, and Dick Clark Remembered

April 18, 2012 07:16 PM by Candace Young

Last week, in a stunning turn of events, the American Idol judges were forced to use their save on Jessica Sanchez when she received the lowest number of votes. Jennifer Lopez ran up on stage to tell Jessica she was staying, a move that some speculated seemed like it could have been planned ahead. The Top 7 will each perform two songs tonight. Keep reading for highlights…

This week, Ryan Seacrest begins the show by marking the passing of his very good friend, Dick Clark, today. Sad news indeed.

The Top 7 will each do a hit song from the year 2000 to now, followed by a ‘soul selection’ from back in the day.

Round One – Recent Hits

American Idol kicks off with Hollie Cavanaugh singing Rolling In The Deep. Will she ‘think too much’ again this week? This girl has pipes and belts it out. There are only a couple wobbly moments. She’s more relaxed and ‘into it’ as well. Steven Tyler and JLo are both thrilled with it, but Randy earns ‘boos’ by saying it wasn’t quite perfect.

Colton Dixon is trying something different with a metal version of Bad Romance by Lady Gaga. It’s amazing at times, with strange moments. His stage presence is awesome. The judges applaud him taking a chance.

Elise Testone has repeatedly been in the bottom three.  She performs No One by Alicia Keyes in her signature style. It’s not my favorite song she’s done, but just love her style! Steven says she sang her ‘tushy’ off tonight. Elise tells Ryan she hasn’t been feeling well and she found out her dog may not make it. Hmm.

Phillip Phillips is doing an ‘intimate’ song tonight – his interpretation of an Usher tune, U Got It Bad. It’s just stellar. I got a case of Jennifer’s ‘goosies’! JLo tells him it was so sexy – she’s so right. It’s kind of mind-boggling to see such a musician’s musician find his way on to American Idol.

Jessica Sanchez needs to reconnect with the audience tonight. She performs Falling by Alicia Keyes. She sounds sensational with the power ballad, of course, but I would love to see her do something age appropriate. Steven rants about her passion, and Jennifer and Randy rave over her talent.

Skylar Laine is doing the country version of Gaga’s Born This Way.  Not sure what’s going on with her outfit – looks like she left her dressing gown on with her clothes, but her performance is terrific! She’s intense and sounds amazing. The judges dub her a rockin’ country girl – they love it.

Joshua Ledet, aka Mantasia, is paying tribute to his American Idol, Fantasia, tonight by performing I Believe. The man looks good in his smart red jacket, and his voice is incredible! The judges are full of praise. Steven says he could sing the phone book.

Round Two – Soul Selection

Hollie Cavanaugh is surprised with a video message from her favorite soccer team – the Liverpool Football Club. Hollie’s singing Son of a Preacher Man tonight.  Though she belts it out, it’s a little tame on the ‘soul’ end of things. Randy liked it better than her first song, but Steven thinks she can push it more.

Colton Dixon is seated at the piano for Dancing In September by Earth, Wind, and Fire. It’s good, but there is no ‘wow’ moment, and he’s not exactly on the ‘soul train’. The judges unanimously diss the song choice and agree it didn’t come together for him like it usually does.

Elise Testone is performing Let’s Get It On by Marvin Gaye for her soul selection on American Idol.  She grooves and delivers the soul without doubt. Jennifer comments that she needs to show more emotion so viewers get to know her. Randy gets booed for saying she over-sang the song.

Phillip Phillips returns to the stage to sing In the Midnight Hour. He’s got a sax backing him up, so it’s sounding great, and then lo and behold,  ‘Fun Phillip’ emerges! Love it! The judges are crazy about it too. Jennifer holds herself back from getting up to dance with him. Randy says he’s spontaneous and Steven calls him ‘beautifully awkward’!

Jessica Sanchez sings her ass off performing Try A Little Tenderness by Otis Redding. As always she’s astounding vocally, but again, it’s tough to relate to her singing this song at her age. The judges tell her the voice alone isn’t going to do it and let her know they’ll be pushing her to perform and connect more.

Skylar Laine performs I Heard It Through The Grapevine. This girl commands the stage and seems like she’s already giving her own concert! Randy comments that, like Phillip, she just comes out to do what she does! He loves it. Steven tells her she’s like a wild horse that refuses to be tamed.

Joshua Ledet is doing Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna Come. From the first note it’s compelling. He kills it! The judges get to their feet. They’re all blown away.

Who will you vote for? Kris Allen and LMFAO perform on tomorrow night’s results show!
