Last week, Elise Testone was eliminated and the American Idol Top 5 were revealed. Tonight, the five finalists will perform songs from the sixties, as well as British pop tunes. Little Stevie is the celebrity mentor tonight. Keep reading for highlights…
American Idol opens with Jimmy and Little Stevie trying to convince good girl, Hollie Cavanaugh, to go out there and act like she doesn’t care what anyone thinks. Okay then. She performs Ike and Tina Turner’s River Deep. It’s easily her best sounding song to date, I only wished she’d gone more crazy with the dancing a la Tina. Steven was impressed with her bluesy runs. Jennifer Lopez and Randy both agreed it was a new, more energized Hollie.
Phillip Phillips is doing The Letter by The Boxtops. His arrangement has the mentors bickering. Phillip performs with his guitar and shoots tons of sexy, knowing, sidelong glances as he delivers a bluesy, groovy tune that has the audience going nuts and on their feet! The judges loved how he ‘vibed’ it up and made it his own.
Skylar Laine‘s started out wanting to do Knock On Wood, but the mentors convince her to do Fortunate Son by Creedence Clearwater Revival in hopes she’ll have a ‘moment’. She does a lot of stomping in her cowboy boots and dirties up her vocals – it’s great! The judges are enthused with her fearlessness and energy – she’s a natural to be on stage!
Joshua and Phillip are doing That Lovin’ Feeling as a duet. The pair joke with Ryan Seacrest that they were just given the song and say Joshua doesn’t even know it. They make an odd combo, and it feels slow in the beginning, but they totally pull it off – even having a bit of fun at the end. Steven raves about as everyone giggles at the ‘match made in heaven’.
Jessica Sanchez has chosen Proud Mary, but the mentors are skeptical of the choice. Jessica appears on stage in a little hoochie dress and and belts out an energetic and raunchy version of the tune. The vocals are powerful, but the performance end of things is a little weaker. Steven and Jennifer loved it, but Randy thinks it was just okay, saying her voice saved her.
Joshua Ledet is singing The Temptations’ Ain’t Too Proud To Beg. It’s basically flawless, and his runs remind me of James Brown! The judges are madly in love with it, and him.
The judges give round one to Joshua, Skylar, and Hollie.
Hollie has selected Leona Lewis’s Bleeding Love for her Brit pop tune. She perches on a piano and slows it down, looking very divalicious. The vocals were less intense than Leona’s, so it was a softer version. The judges love it and call her the ‘dark horse’.
Phillip is doing Time Of The Season, and the mentors are in total agreement with his arrangement. He performs it with a slow tempo, leaving the melody intact, which is different for him. The judges think it was ‘nice’ and ‘good’, but don’t seem bowled over.
Jessica, Skylar, and Hollie are performing (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher as a trio. Skylar stands out – her ‘country’ style is so different! Steven shrugs that it was a weird arrangement but they sang the hell out of it.
Skylar performs Dusty Springfield’s You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me. She gives it an old-school country and western treatment and delivers the goods vocally! Randy says it was flawless and amazing – he just loved it. Jennifer thinks she just might win. Steven grins that ‘it works when you work it’.
Jessica has chosen You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker. The mentors are worried about her sounding like a lounge singer – Jessica’s appalled at the idea! When she takes the stage, they’ve got her crouching on the floor in the fog surrounded by candles, which is cheesy/flaky at best, but she sounds fabulous with her slow, lilting, soothing arrangement. The judges gush.
Joshua is singing To Love Somebody at the suggestion of Jimmy and Little Stevie, aka, the Bickersons. On stage, Joshua ends up having one of those sought after ‘moments’ when he sings the crap out of the tune. The judges come to their feet. They can’t believe he delivered it with that much passion when he’d never even heard it before. Randy and Jennifer both think he’s one of the best singers they’ve ever heard!
Carrie Underwood and Coldplay perform on tomorrow night’s results show!
