It’s no secret that this season of NBC‘s The Biggest Loser has been less than inspiring, but maybe it’s time to make the contestants sweat to the oldies instead? That may be what fitness guru, Richard Simmons had in mind when he revealed why he is not a fan of shows like The Biggest Loser. Read on for more…
It’s not that Richard Simmons does not believe in the concept of shows like The Biggest Loser, which is obviously to get obese folks to learn how to lose weight, but he is not sure the way the show carries it out is correct. In a recent interview in Men’s Health Magazine, Simmons spoke of shows like The Biggest Loser: “I’m not into any show that makes people compete when they lose weight. I think the show has some merit and they do some good. But voting off people every week because they didn’t lose enough weight, or giving somebody a car or money because they did lose weight? That’s terrible!”
In all honesty, it could be those very rewards that cause the contestants to behave like huge toddlers, which is what we witnessed this season. Richard Simmons said that his father tried that tactic on him, as he offered him a dollar for every pound he lost as a kid, but: “It didn’t work. And it doesn’t really work in the long run. Who are you competing against? It’s you. You need to be doing this for you and only you. Not to win a car, not to stay at a fancy resort, not to get a treadmill or an elliptical for your home. The real pride, the real present, is your health and your longevity. My whole career I have never done anything where competition was involved with weight loss.”
Hmm, maybe Richard Simmons is on to something here? My guess is if all the rewards were removed, there would be more hard work and less bellyaching from the contestants. Maybe NBC should just scrap the entire show for 2 hours of Sweating To The Oldies instead? What do you think? Comment and share your thoughts below!
